I couldn't get it to work, but I have no experience with networks and such, so it is probably easier for someone in the know. But if you have a PS2 slim, it is supposedly a much faster way to boot games (ie games stored on a PC, connected to the PS2 slim's eth port, and loaded via OPL). Take care though, you may need a crossover ethernet cable, you'll need to look into that one as I'm no expert.
I use OPL 0.8, with a fat PS2, PAL model and for internal HDD games connected with a network adapter this version works a treat. The options available for disc read speeds etc... nearly always fix any problems. The only one I have to load from HD Loader 0.8c is Eye Toy Play 2, out of about 30 games.
If you decide to buy a fat PS2, and it's PAL, pm me, and I can install Free McBoot for you if it is convenient depending on where you live etc... Send me an official 8mb Card and pay for the postage and I can sort it for you no bother. I'm in the UK, so postage shouldn't be too pricey.
I'm not 100% sure if all my apps are the most updated versions, but they all do exactly what I want them to, and they work well. Especially OPL 0.8. I'm not sure about the beta being better or not, but I do know that 0.8 should do all you need it to.
