So I've got a CECHB01 (20GB BC) and I've been running OPL 0.7 for a while and it runs like a dream, boots most anything I can think of, and plays most things fine off of SMB.
I just downloaded the 0.8 compiled ELF today to give it a shot. It looks beautiful.
    Love the new GUI.

Only problem is anything I try to load (my old UL share, or the new (correctly named and formatted) ISO share) will drop to black, but never give me any colors to indicate loading, and never loads, I've even let it sit for a few hours last night, no luck.

Have you guys got any idea why this would be happening, perhaps I need to compile my own ELF with some changes? Anyway, tell me what you guys think, and thanks~

Edit: Some logs from wireshark. I ran OPL0.7 and booted Tales of Symphonia, also included are my two attempts (one UL format, one ISO format) of me trying to load them in the new 0.8.
The OPL0.8 logs show the starting of the network device, and the attempt (where it drops to black), and the quitting back to XMB. The 0.7 log shows from starting of device up to the menu .

I did read through it, though i don't load anything from USB besides the ELF... everything else is off of the network, and like I said, it pulls the games list up just fine (either share) it just won't run them....

I tried reformatting my thumb-drive again (the one I used for 0.7) to no avail..It seems as though it's more of a network/console related issue...

Edit: I'm making some wireshark caps of SMB working, and not working, will post in OP in a bit

The most common problems for people switching from OPL v0.7 to v0.8 are the new passworded login method and the lack of proper access permissions for the fileshare folder as well as for the files and folders within it. This often leads to having the games visible in the list, but freezing early in the launch attempt.

Thus the problems to fix are usually located on the PC side of the connection rather than on the PS2 or PS3 consoles.

So on your PC (or NAS) you should doublecheck both the sharing permissions for the fileshare itself and the security access permissions for its contents to make sure that the 'user' which OPL logs in as through SMB has permission to access all contents as needed. And for VMC usage those permissions must include write access.

Hmmm, thanks.. I'm connecting to a Win7x86 box if it makes any difference...
I've checked basic and advanced sharing privileges for the two shares and both of them are set up to give /Guest/ access to the files..... I guess I'll keep fiddiling around with that computer and hope it starts working~

I suspect that you will continue to have problems as long as you try to use anonymous file sharing. Lots of people have reported problems doing that with Win7.

Okay, made an account, full permissions, special PS2 one, PS2/SMB, anyway, still getting the same black screen when starting the games.... I was looking over the wireshark logs and it seems to get stuck before the Neg. Protocol Request, though I'm not all that experienced at digging through these things I can tell that's where it's happening..... I would think a invalid password/username would be fairly easy to spot, that and after the disconnect there doesn't seem to be any communication with the PS3 (the last packet is the RST one that seems to end the stream...

I have the same problem as well. I have a PS3 fat 60gb machine and have been using Samba to share all my stuff for years across different machines.

I have created the PS2SMB share for OPL0.7 which worked but I got the same symptoms as the OP when I use OPL0.8.

I then create another PS2SMB share that requires password access - i.e. guest ok = no, and set up the access info in OPL, using the same SMB account name that I use on my PCs, but I got exactly the same behavior.

I can see the list of games, scroll through it but when I try to launch a game that used to work with OPL 0.7, only blank screen, and no debug colors, shows. The samba log shows PS3 is connected up to the point when a game is launched, then it shows that the PS3 has disconnected from it and there is no other activity. I use my laptop and connect to PS2SMB and it connects fine and stays connected (according to the log).

Looking at the status page of SWAT (the GUI for Samba set up) confirms that that the PS3 is connected when the game list is loaded and open, then disconnected when a launch attempt is made.

Not sure why and a bit lost.

Hi guys. I had a similar problem with my setup a while ago. I have a slim PS2, and a 60GB backwards compatible EU / PAL PS3 (no emotion engine - software emulation).

I have a Mac, and I used that for SMB transfers with 0.7 public, with both the PS2 and PS3. This worked fine.

Although, it's worth noting that the PS3 has a much slower SMB transfer speed than the PS2. I'm pretty sure this is to do with the lack of emotion engine (there are also games that work fine with PS2 that have glitches on the PS3). I haven't heard of any people with US / NTSC 60GB BC PS3s with slow SMB speeds. (I’d actually be interested if anyone has any additional information on this, since I’d love for my PAL 60GB PS3 to have SMB transfer speeds comparable to my PS2. It’s pretty much the same speed as USB 1.1 on the PS3).

Anyway, when I switched to 0.8 public, I had the same problem you're describing on both my PS2 and PS3. The OPL program would load up fine, but the games wouldn’t launch. I just had a black screen. But, I found that with one or two games, if I waited AGES, they would load up to a certain extent. However, the transfer speeds were atrocious for some reason. Far slower than normal – considerably slower than USB 1.1.

So, I tried a bunch of stuff. I found that if I restarted in Windows XP using Bootcamp, or if I used XP in any way for the SMB transfer, the problem was gone. I concluded that there had to be something specific to the OSX version of SMB that was causing the issue. I now transfer my games over SMB using Windows XP running through Parallels on OSX. It works flawlessly.

Essentially, I thought this info might be useful to you guys because it shows that the operating system / version of SMB that is being used could well be the cause of the problem.

    Hope this helps.

Windows 7 seems to have issue with OPL 0.8 on SMB running via PS2 or PS3. I use Windows XP for SMB running OPL 0.8 via PS3 with no problem.
