Then it likely has source in changes I made for r74.

The new share name configuration could be it. Or if it also affects the USB loader, it could be the change to TGame structure (zero padding of the fields I added in that revision).

Miscalculation on my side while padding the strings, sorry for that.

I pushed a fix for the problem, please someone try it. It didn't show up in my tests so sorry for the problems it caused :chinscrat

EDIT: just tested r78, FF12 now launch so the problem is fixed ;)

I've now tested rev78 with FF12 launched both from USB and from SMB, and both launch methods work fine. But its MC access problem remains unchanged from older USBLD revisions.

On a side note, it is now clear that the fixed bug was responsible for letting me 'trick' the games "La Pucelle Tactics" and "Makai Kingdom" into booting over network by using GSM, as I now tried repeating that trick with rev78 and it had no effect at all... So I guess I'll be hanging on to the 'bugged' rev77 just for launching those games (and possibly others like them ("Phantom Brave" ?))

I'm wondering if it's not a timing problem, with EEUG's network drivers it detects both MC load/save just fine... But this just applies to SMB version.

hmmm. I guess I need to figure out how to update the PS2SDK in the GSHI toolchain. :( I tried to get a MinGW environment set up yesterday and for some reason it failed to compile the PS2SDK.

I did a fresh install yesterday with the now fixed ps2sdk from the svn. compiled with no error on my side.

I don't know what I have done wrong yesterday, but now the ps2sdk is compiling the toolchain as we speak. once done with that, I have to open up the source code and figure out what libs to install and how. this is the part that always gets me on setting up a dev environment.

That is great news, as this is one game where it really helps having the ability to test patches over network. (I've burned at least 6 different ESR discs for FF12engZJS already.)

True, which raises the question why the same problem exists at all in the USB version.

But at this point we are bound to get a growing divergence between USB and SMB results, since the higher speed of SMB makes some things possible which never can be achieved with the slow USB interface of the PS2, especially where it concerns games with timing-dependent initialization.


Btw:
Fortunately I was partially wrong about having lost the ability to 'trick' some Nippon Ichi RPGs that normally do not boot with USBLoader to work well by using GSM. That trick still works reliably with rev78 of USBLoader on my slim PSTwo, though it fails on my fat PS2. I have no idea why they differ in this, but I'm glad it still works on the slim...

Several of the Nippon Ichi RPGs have had problems working with USBAdvance too, and as I now have two of those running with this trick I am also going to try the rest of those I have, to see if they too can be made to boot the same way. Either way it is clear that USBLoader is very close to being able to do it unaided too, when just a video timing difference caused by GSM can make it work. And since we are again talking about timing here, it is very possible that the SMS network drivers would fix this problem too, for all of the Nippon Ichi games...
