I think using a router is going to be your best bet. Use the cat5e ethernet cable, not the crossover!

    @SP193
He has been using a crossover (direct PS2-to-PC) because he doesnt have a router yet and that 169.254.169.178 is an ISP assigned IP you get when connected directly from cable Modem-to-PC. Its only use is a direct connection to the internet, where his ISP might re-assign him a different IP every once in a while, mine does it.

Not true at all. In fact, when installing games to my PS2 via hdl_dump I leave my computer to get an Automatic Private IP then assign my PS2 another in the 169.254.0.0/24 subnet - they can then communicate just fine.

SMB also works fine with this configuration, haven't tested with a PS2 but I can open SMB shares on a computer connected with a crossover cable by navigating to \\169.254.x.x\ (said computer's IP) in an Explorer window.

The most common reason for this not to work is if the subnet mask is set wrong on the PS2. It needs to be 255.255.0.0 in order to match the APIPA standard.

Yepp, I guess that is right.
There are menus for Shares and for User/Account-Settings.

Look at the User/Account-Settings-Menu, if the GUEST-Account is active.
I also had it de-activated on a friends PC, when I configured it for OPL and he also has WinXP Home.

That's the best way of testing it!

what i need to know is can i still use my crossover cable with the router?
It SHOULD work (in most cases), but it could make problems...
A crossed patch-cable is meant to be used for a direct connection, like the others said...

Btw.: Maybe it is your Crossover-Cable, which is the problem?

    i have two standard cat5 cables, 1) is a cat5e, 2) is cat5 but i don't know if it is cat5/cat5e?

will i run into problems if one is a cat5 and one is a cat5e and one is cat5e crossover?
The Crossover could cause problems, but the CAT5 and CAT5e-Cables should work without a problem.

i'm still trying to use the crossover cable straight to my pc.

i deleted the ipconf.dat files from my mc and used ulaunch as a test to see my ip address i get, pc is still set to auto lan connection .

    and i get
    pc side
    169.254.169.178
    255.255.0.0

so i used that ip address for my opl settings

    ps2
    192.168.0.10
    255.255.0.0
    169.254.169.178

    169.254.169.178

    445

    PS2SMB
    GUEST
    (BLANK)

    still nothing
Darn,... You missinterpret/misstake the meaning of JNABK's sentence: 'You MUST find out what your PC's LAN IP is, or you will never connect to it if it is not the correct one.'.

You mustn't 'find out' anything,... You must SET your PCs IP manually, since the PS2 expects it (PC) to have a static/fixed IP.

    Got that???

WTF? Then my Homenet shouldn't work, since I use '255.255.255.0'.

Edit: Oh, you mean it must be set to 255.255.0.0, if the used IP is within the '169.xxx.xxx.xxx'-range? That could be true. I don't know it for sure,...

The subnet mask basically indicates the scope of the subnet. For a subnet where only the last octet changes (e.g. 192.168.0.x) then it should be 255.255.255.0.

If two octets change (e.g. 169.254.x.x) then the mask should be 255.255.0.0 - in the most extreme case where only the first octet remains the same (e.g. 10.x.x.x) then 255.0.0.0 is used.

This just allows flexibility, of course. If you wanted to, you could split 169.254.x.x further (e.g. 169.254.0.x, 169.254.1.x) and use a 255.255.255.0 mask, at the expense of the devices in each subnet from being able to communicate with more than another 253 devices (this can be overcome by routing, of course, but let's not go into that ).

The reason why I brought it up in the first place is because it's something I forgot to do when FTPing to my PS3 a couple of times and it's an easy mistake to make, especially when 255.255.255.0 is pretty much a default value for Subnet Mask.

Ok, now that you have established an IP for your PC and Gateway, try these settings in OPL, providing your still using those you posted in the quote.

    - PS2 -
    IP: 192.168.1.110
    Mask: 255.255.255.0
    GW: 192.168.1.1

    - PC -
    IP: 192.168.1.100
    Port: 445
    Share: PS2SMB
    User: GUEST
    Password:

I set the PS2 IP to a high enough IP, to be sure nothing else is using it.
Make sure you save settings from the Main settings screen after you have input all that.

Now also double check your PC's IP settings from the "ipconfig /all" command.

Also, i wouldnt worry about those share / account users settings, as i never changed mine from default, so you shouldnt mess with them either from there. Simply use the actual folder/drive you want to share and go thru the right-click process i described earlier. You should be fine just using that.

Next double check your game files are correctly named if ISOs and in the DVD or CD folders. UL format (USBUtil or USB Extreme installed) go on the Share's root, next to the DVD and CD folders.

Yep, sure can....i do and it works just the same as FAT32.

Lets set your PC to a Static IP, so it will always be the same number.

Goto START > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections

Right-click the icon ( im assuming theres only one there) and select Properties.

Where it says "This connection uses the following items", scroll til you see Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click it to highlight it and select the Properties button.

Put a check in the "Use the following IP address"
Input the same numbers i have in the image.

    Leave the DNS on auto.
Press OK, then OK again and wait until it self configures, then your done.

Next goto the PS2, boot OPL and set these :

    - PS2 -
    IP: 192.168.1.101
    Mask: 255.255.255.0
    GW: 192.168.1.1

    - PC -
    IP: 192.168.1.200
    Port: 445
    Share: PS2SMB
    User: GUEST
    Password:

Now if you still cant get any games to list, i'd say its not the IP settings, but something else and we will work on that next. I'll wait to see if that worked for you.
