External Hdd would be your best bet dude, the problem you will have will be to convert the game to the proper ps2 OPL 0.9 file structure
i think an aplication called usb advance for ps2 will sort you out but what you have to do is make your game into an iso then find it
with browse and set the destination eg the HDD and let it do its work thats the only way i can suggest

    peace

If I am remembering correctly, 9 has the Dual-Layer reading built in...But, just in case, I would say to get Imageburn and create an ISO from the disk and try putting it on the HDD and just trying to run the game first.

You didn't state what type of HDD your using so, it gets a little fuzzy at this point. If your using a "USB" HDD, you need to use USB Advance to install the game. If your using an "Internal" HDD, I suggest using WinHiip and Physically Connecting the HDD to your computer and installing that way.

I had a copy of GOW1 for a couple weeks and had it on Internal HDD by way of WinHiip without any real problems... (I think my PS2 froze up once or twice, but I believe it was my PS2. It likes to spite me from time to time.) I haven't tried Xenosaga yet, been too busy playing Kingdom Hearts1 and Okami. (Okami load screens go way too fast)

For Okami internal turn down DMA Mode to UDMA 2 or lower to increase load times
If you are trying to get Demon Fang get better at brush stroke kill

I turned the DMA down to the lowest setting and have a Autofire Controller. It gives just enough time to get a fang... I always forget to use the Brush Kills... v.v?
