    Well.
So I guess Iīll start off here and first say hello!

In 2007 I stashed away my PS2-slim 7xxxxsomething, PAL-version. But being bored an afternoon, I dusted it off and brought it back to life today. =)

Being afraid of wearing out my laser too early, I decided to hack it with Free McBoot, and also install Open PS2 Loader 0.8, and thatīs what Iīve been doing today, along with ripping backups of my original games. I am after all a newbie, so it took a pretty long time =).

Now that was a little background. I now have a succesfully Free McBooted machine with OPL installed. My original games run from my USB-HDD and itīs great, but I still have some newbie-questions that I really hope that someone could answer.

    1. I installed the FFXII-no-stutter patch, but the intro-movie still stutters some. Should it be like that? Will I be able to finish FFXII playing from my USB-HDD?

    2. Is it worth the effort to rig up a network (SMB-loading) rather than using USB-loading? Will the games load noticable faster?

    3. How is the compatibility with PS3? Will it in the nearest future be able to play full-speed PS2-games on PS3 with OPL?

With hope for answers to my questions. Thanks for keeping up the good work!

1- you dont need that patch with OPL, as i have FFXII too and have played it from USB and SMB. SMB had hardly any 'stutters', just a split-second 'glitch' and continued pretty smoothly.

One thing to note is there a few places in the game it may freeze and this has nothing to do with OPl, as even happens from disc playing. So i'd recommend setting up SMB anyway, as i got past those freeze areas by switching between USB and SMB. I made a thread about it somewhere in the OPL forums, but dont know off hand where it is.

2- yes, as i explained above there is many more games that dont stutter in SMB, but there will be some games that stutter in both, due to the transfer speeds of USB 1.1 and network speed. The internal HDD is pretty much the only method without any FMV stuttering, as you can adhust the HDD read speeds (DMA Modes).

3- Only a BC PS3 can run PS2 games and i cant answer on compatibility, as i dont have one to try with.

Thank you very much for your input!

I guess Iīll look into setting up a network here at home then. As I said Iīm new at this, so here are some follow up questions:

    1. Is there a tutorial for setting up a network somewhere? I donīt really know how to do it. I have quite a new modem/router (Netgear Gigabit Home Gateway) that connects me to the internet, is it just to plug & play? (I guess it ainīt that easy, because if I just would plug & play Iīll just connect to the internet).

    2. The games on PC. Do they need to be unfragmented and the ones over 4 gb installed just like on USB?

    3. Can I just use my USB-harddrive (with my installed games), connect it to the PC and run them from there via network?

    Thanks again!

    3. Can I just use my USB-harddrive (with my installed games), connect it to the PC and run them from there via network?

Thank you very much for another quick answer and pointing me in the right direction!

But there is still one thing that donīt get itīs answer in the tutorial:

"1. Is there a tutorial for setting up a network somewhere? I donīt really know how to do it.

How do I set up my PC?

I have quite a new modem/router (Netgear Gigabit Home Gateway) that connects me to the internet. So if I plug in my PS2, it will simply get connected to the internet. How do I make it connect to my PC instead?"

    Ah. My fault!
I just clicked on the "Network" tab and didnīt find how to do it.
But I should have clicked on the "Settings" tab instead!

Thanks, Iīll try this in the coming days. Iīm really looking forward to play my PS2-games at a little better speeds!

Well. After three sweaty hours of trying to set up my SMB-network with computer-to-ps2 with cross-over cable, it finally worked!! And itīs totally worth it!

I am so glad that I decided to do this. Just ran Final Fantasy XII intro without a single glitch! Now I can take backups of all my old originals!

(There were a couple of things that made the install glitch. BOTH my external drive AND the directory therein was named "PS2SMB". I decided to move all the game files out to the root instead, and they suddenly appeared on the TV! *insert a big yeeeah here*)
