Hello,
I use Opl 0.8 through SMB.
My Iso are stored on a micros sd (16gb class 10 Kingmax) which i have plugged in with an SD adapter into my computer.
Now my question is:
Will games load faster/ stutter less when I create a fat32 partition on my internal laptop harddisk, store my Iso's there and then run them using SMB?
Also, a n00b-faq would be very nice! Opl rocks!
If your already playing your games via SMB, then they will still be the same for FAT32 as they are for NTFS or whatever filesystem your using.
Network is a bit faster, smoother than USB connected to the PS2, but i dont think there is any difference from different filesystems on SMB.
If your Cardreader is slow, or simply connected to a slow connection (@PC-side), then 'Yes it could run faster...'.Quote:

@ JNABK, not sure if it's the right place here to ask, but when readung through your SMB-list, Kingdom Hearts has no comments at all.
Does that mean Kingdom Hearts runs perfectly smooth on your ps2 system using smb? Because in my case, definitely not, the intro cutscenes really stutter bigtime.

JNABK even reported some stutters, where my old PC/File-Server and my newer NAS have no problems at all... (not that he reported wrong,... It is simply his equipment (hard-&software-combo), which probably differs from mine...).
...and... Guess what? Afaik, he normally shares his USB-Device with Windows.
Another thing I forgott to mention is, that flash-memory-devices usually have a lower transfer-bandwith, compared to HDDs.
Now,... Put one and one together (even if you are using the adapter on a USB2.0-Connection) and what you'll get?
I can atleast vouch for KH2, that the FMVs are fluid...
Currently I do not have KH1 installed, so I don't know it for sure...

Ok this is quite strange. I posted a few test-results in the compatibilitylist-thread for Three versions of Mashed.
They worked pretty ok on SMB > microsd-adapter, only suffering a little stuttering in the intro cutscenes (and the second pal-release froze somwhere @ arcade mode).
But Kingdom Hearts 1 suffered pretty bad stuttering.
Now I formatted my external HDD, WD (about 470Gb) USB 2.0 and tried
Kingdom Hearts I and the Mashed versions.
KH1: stuttering gone, so runs smoothly now.
Mashed: Heavy Stuttering lots more than on microsd, except for gameplay, which works the same
So KH improves, and Mashed goes downhill when I use USB HDD.
Note: I did format the harddrive to Fat 32 via Ul_install @ CMD and used PowerDefragmenter before trying.
I will test both games on internal HDD on laptop later.
You have to keep in mind not all storage devices work exactly the same, each is programmed by different manufacturers to do the same thing, but not quite in the exact same manner and when you mix in a homebrew app to read these devices, results can be very different.
The developers use whatever equipment they have to make the program, then rely on reports to improve other devices people use and in combination with the many different PC OSs, console versions/regions and the devices used for storage. Theres bound to be inconsistancies with some conbinations, since they all behave a bit different, so developers have to work out a 'general' compatibilty as they become aware of each new conflict of a specific device or combination of devices.
I have several consoles, PCs and storage devices and for the most part, all work well together and even in when inter-mixed with the others. But i have found a lot of differences too, like some games dont work using one console, but another works fine. One HDD works OK, but another not as well.
Then there is the processes of ripping, installing, formatting, etc....all these combinations can make the difference on a game's ability to work perfectly or not at all.
