Agreed. I'm not really out to 'compete' in a contest, rather than try to help give the the program the respectful iconic logo it deserves.

Also added a lens flare to my original entry for shits and giggles.

As many here know well, I'm not much of a graphics creator myself, though I do have some strong opinions on the subject.
One of those opinions is that a graphic design should be consistent, so while I for example like some of the designs by BeyonderBill with that Circle-enclosed program title which is also reflected in a 'bottom surface', this reflection is completely inconsistent with the fact that the power-button icon next to that circle has no reflection at all. This completely ruins the realistic impression. I'd really prefer that image with the button icon removed.
On the other hand, you guys also need to remember that we are here NOT talking about an optional skin background, but about a main logo/splash screen to be incorporated into the main elf. And surely you don't think that we can compress such images much better than already done by the JPG compression algorithms...
So for most of the fancier logos, like that one of BeyonderBill or the first one by amp2006 in his most recent post there will be a heavy price to pay in the form of increased elf size, matching the size of the JPG file used. So for that kind of logo we are looking at a size increase (and thus MC space loss) of around 200KB or more...
Is that really something we want ?
I'm not here criticizing the designs as such, but only their suitability for use as an integral logo of the elf file. Many of these designs are in my opinion better suited for use in future skin themes, which can then be stored on other media than the elf, just as we normally do for the other artwork. But a logo/splash image embedded in the elf itself should be designed with some concern for the potential need of storing it on MC without too much waste of space.
an addition of 200KB represents a packed elf size increase of over 35%. (relative to OPL rev 300)
And the lost space exceeds that used by 3 gamesaves for FFX...
(I'm just trying to illustrate the reasonable proportions here.)
Is it really worth it, just to make that logo super-fancy...?
My own conclusion is that we should use a fairly small logo, without much use of effects that raise the picture complexity inordinately, so that the resulting image can still be efficiently packed.
Best regards: dlanor
Agreed. After all those reboots I still love FreeMCBoot logo - that one is simple yet elegant and has to be fairly small
Also, I was thinking - let's keep things reasonable - let's say 3 logos max per author, does that seem okay to you people?
You're right about the power button. I added it to the image AFTER I did evertything else, kinda as an afterthought. When it was all over and done with, I thought it didn't have anything on it that reminded me of PS2 at all. I mean, other than the fact that it said PS2, nobody would have known that it was a PS2 app. I felt that that as wrong. It needed something visual. I just added a shadow instead of a refflection since the image was so close to the virtual 'surface' in the image.
I was going to post this with my next one, if I decide to continue it at this point, but now I feel I gotta be clear before/if I continue.
All effects, and perspective on each one that I do is done for effect HERE. None of that is necessary for a final piece. Same goes with backgrounds. Anything I do can be put on any background.
Also like JNABK said, I also work in a much higher resolution because it's a LOT easier to shrink something than to make it bigger. They can all be shrunk down for file size.
This could have been important information earlier, so what is too big? What are the file size limits on this thing?
This new one, is pretty much the exact same thing as the first. It's at 400px wide as suggested by someone earlier, and comes in at about 70KB give or take.
Is that too big?
got it dlanor the size can be decreased .i will use jpeg
But latest opl rev is already BIG(564kb) and as far as i see it will be a lot bigger. I think that direction isnt right. It is such a wast of space on MC to put 1 big program. I think that soon OPL will be about 1mb. Compared to 350kb of some earlier rev it is a lot. I know that some of us love shining things
Ok. Already put 3 up so I guess... I'm done.
