So Gradius 3/4 was one of a handful of games that would not ouput sound through the optical output. To hear this game, you have to use the red and white rca connectors. (The intro movie will play through optical out, but the actual games will not)
I know absolutely nothing about coding, but it seems to me like the programmers mistakenly left out the code that nearly every other playstation game has. Wouldn't this be a small amount of code, and be easy to find/copy/paste? I would totally like to give this a shot, as I love the gradius series, but I have no idea where to start.
What do you guys think? Easy? Hard? Where in the ISO could I find the "output through optical" code in other games?

I wouldn't say it's easy. The game Gradius III & IV was one of the earliest PS2 games that was released alongside the PS2. It probably was built with older sound libraries thus the lack of optical sound output. The movies were likely added in later before the game was finalized.
I seriously doubt swapping out a sound library would resolve the issue. If it were that easy I'm sure it would have been done by now.
Anyway, I too would like to see optical sound output, but I just don't see it happening.
