If you have XP, then there is no question about the OS not being compatible. I use it myself on two different computers (WinXPpro SP3).
It is just a matter of properly configuring PS2 and PC to match each other, both when it comes to network addressing and the protocol usage. For example, in order to use anonymous FTP you would first have to enable that mode of filesharing and make sure that your fileshares include read access permissions for the user group "Everyone" and/or the user "Guest". And if you instead want to use proper SMB login, then you will have to add your account info into the SMS.smb file inside your SMS folder on MC. This stuff is not exactly plug'n'play technology, so there are a lot of things you must do by hand.
