    I did a search and found a fair number of people having problems with their HDDs spinning DOWN at inopportune times, am I the first to have a spinning-up problem?

    It's only happening on one game so far - Armored Core Nexus, disc 1. I'm loading it via USB, but shortly after the game starts up (post funny colors, right as the logos are about to start showing), my internal HDD spin up. This isn't a massive problem, of course, I'm mostly just curious. Anybody have any ideas? Has my HDD achieved sentience and begun making decisions on its own?

    @kadorna

    compatibilty wise for backups, external hdd works almost 99% without a hitch, internal hdd can cause issue due to that you cant use BDEMU and BDEMU can only be activated on external hdd

    @crindee

    see hdd's manufacturer website or phone them and ask them to give you the software that will turn off the spindown. Spindown feature in external hdd are good, but only if you use them on device that doesnt have activity much on it, if you are going to use the Hdd for PS3 only, then its a good thing that you turn off the spindown feature.

    Seagate and WD External HDD had a software that let's you turn off spindown feature.

    I know for a fact that internal HD of PS2 with OPL is higher compatibility then USB version

    BDEMU is PS3

    V10 SCPH-50001 with Network adapter SCPH-10281 500 G HD
    PSP 3000 9G 6.20 PRO CFW Perm
    Unofficial FMCB v1.8C OPL self compiled HD and SMB preferred

    you are tripping balls. bdemu is for ps3, and internal hdd in ps2 has the highest compatibility rate.

    Haha yeah, I figured people would only read the thread title as far as "HDD Spin-" before posting a stock reply and moving on (that's why I put "UP" in capital letters... :P). The problem isn't that my internal drive spins down, it's the exact opposite: it powers on when it shouldn't.

    Oh, and I use USB because my HDD isn't nearly big enough to hold my entire collection, and I've already managed to break one network adapter by repeatedly installing/uninstalling my internal drive, so I try to keep the dicking around with it to a minimum. So far I have yet to run into any real compatibility problems with USB, and the increased load time isn't a big deal for action/adventure games where things aren't being loaded as often as they would be in, let's say, an RPG - for instance, I tried replaying Wild Arms via USB, realized there was about ten seconds of lag in between entering/exiting buildings, and gave up.

    Perhaps that game loads the ATA interface drivers, even if it might not use the HDD unit?

    As long as the ATA interface drivers and loaded, the connected HDD unit will power up.

    SP193 read my mind: the game specifically has the HDD modules and loads them accordingly. It's probably a case where the JPN version officially supported the HDD. During localization, the developer/publisher probably stripped the hdd support but neglected to remove/comment out the ATA drivers.
