And here is the problem. When I change the -pfs to something else ("-pfs=pfs9:" and few more inf further tests) it lets me make install and use hdd to play, but the emulated mc is unavailable. It seems there is something wrong with handling of -pfs option as it doesn't work at all for me. I checked with few more games, not hdd aware, which were working fine when pfs was set to pfs0:, and now they also stopped working. I also tried changing the default encoded values (in binary) to some other pfs and it also doesn't work. The Emulated MC is available only when partition mounted under pfs0: (tried also playing with other options, both by command line and encoded arg in binary "\n-n\n1", "\n-o\n1" and "\n-n\n1" - yes, I know, but it's faster than recompiling + my ps2sdk is down at the moment and I also need to compile older gcc first, because toolchain will not compile, gcc3.23?, on newer gcc because of insecure code).Besides it's better to specify another pfs device with -pfs= argument (something like "-pfs=pfs9:") since the game will most likely try to use "pfs0:" device to mount its own partitions. This workaround will probably allow the game to use hard drive to install and/or load game data but it doesn't guarantee good perfomance since size of cache buffers (for HDD/PFS module) is set to minimum (to save memory as well).
