Console reset: How to prevent HDD power off?

Some games like for example pretty much every SingStar don't allow in-game reset. So I manually reset the console to switch between those games. However, the HDD is powered off then. I think this might be bad for the HDD's lifespan. Furthermore, back in OPL users have to wait quite some seconds for the HDD to be powered on again. Is there a way to have the HDD in some kind of always-on state?

I think there's a setting in OPL to not refresh game list every time you open it. Never tried it myself, but i think that's something you should try if you're concerned about the lifespan of your hdd :P And yes, it sucks that singstar games won't allow IGR

I didn't know OPL allowed game switching! It works with Ethernet and USB too I assume? Is there a way to get it to work with ESR? :S

Aside from these games that don't support IGR, if your concern is to not shutdown the HDD, there is now (rev > 530) a new parameter in the settings:

"Automatic HDD spin down"

If set to 0, the HDD will not be shutdown during IGR anymore (and will never be shutdown on idle either).

Does the HDD spin during a PS2 console button reset with that setting?

Nope. Unfortunately, the fatty PS2's "Reset/Off" button loses the reset functionality once the Network Adapter is attached -- most likely to conform to the ATX power standard -- and thus the button becomes one of those hold-for-4-seconds deals just like a PC. Too bad the PS2 BIOS and built in browser does not allow the user to change that behavior to some degree. It would be ideal for a future version of FreeMCBoot to support automatic start of the HDD upon powering up the PS2 (or even HDD launch path support) so that the modules are already loaded and it doesn't take uLaunch or OPL extra time to invoke those modules itself. That way, you could then disable HDD Idle Spin Down in OPL r530 and up so that the HDD is constantly powered until the system is powered off to reduce wear and tear to some degree ...

Won't help with games that are IGR incompatible though ... :(
