I won't happen that this support will be added because only the early fat PS2 models had that interface. The most PS2 models only have the USB port. Almost every homebrew target on USB devices so everyone can use the software.
Adding support for this minority of PS2's won't happen.
Since you have a FAT PS2 you could try internal HDD. Latest revisions of OPS2L support internal HDD for FAT PS2 and V12/13 PS2 model with HD-Combo / HD-Connect.

how fast is smb on ps2 anyway?
Almost same data rate like original dvd (didn't measure exact rate, only watched the loading time). So it's a good alternative for backing up your games since there is no great difference in loading speed in relation to original dvd.
It's true that some games won't work out of the box but this is a work in progress and the compatibility raises with new releases.
IŽm not sure if anyone (since it is open source) would add support for it in 'Open PS2 Loader', but there isnŽt even a Homebrew IEEE 1394/FireWire/I-Link-Driver.
IF we see it someday, it still would be an other alternative and nice enhancement/feature.
FAT users without NWA/BBA are still forced to USB only, while Slim-Users now have a choice even without buying an extra Case, or NWA.
If FAT users would have another choice without NWA (if it is atleast a bit faster than USB) that would give more people the possibilty to play games from alternate devices with reliable speed.
Practically those which have a V7 and a V9, but only one NWA can put their NWA to the V9 and use an IEEE 1394-HD on their V7.
NWAs are quite limited compared to how many FATs have been produced.
Anyway,... The driver is not developed and if no-one develops one, weŽll never see such an implementation.
So the best thing to do is to hope for it, or to contribute.
PS2 FireWire does not seem to be fully configured, it appears that only the bare minimum of wires for FW as network are available programmatically.
iLink.IRX is the file to disassemble if you are serious about it, but I think the speed is bad for HDD, OK for remote controlling stuff.
I don't think so. Though it might be a custom FireWire implementation unable to achieve the 400 Mb/s that are the normal transfer rate, I know there have been some applications with DV camera (at least in Japon). DV rate being 25 Mb/s, it is certain that this speed can be achieved.
So far I have not seen anyone able to get any good speeds through this socket on the PS2.
I see ieee1394 hardware structure that can passed by DIY so that which no support.
