All depends on what's causing the YLOD.

Usually, your best bet is to send it away for a re-ball. This replaces all the solder on the CPU/GPU. Can be expensive though, and might be cheaper to buy a new PS3.

There are tutorials on the net for doing a re-flow, which re-melts the old, existing solder on the chips, and (hopefully) gets it all going again. This method will only be temporary,
lasting from a couple of hours to a couple of months.

There could be other causes for the YLOD though.

You won't fix a YLOD using any sort of software, a YLOD indicates a hardware failure upon start-up, most commonly this would be the RSX GPU.

There is no easy, sure fix for this. If you want to try an at best temporary fix then you can get yourself a cheap heatgun and attempt a mediocre BGA reflow (you will find no shortage of guides on this via google), but be aware that you can cause further damage to the console this way.

Either way, it's well broken. you can risk it with a cheap temporary fix, have it re-balled for $$$ or just buy a new one.
