What is a pkg file. I know it's a container for data on the PS3, but what is it exactly?

Is it a header and then some sort of container?

I'm wondering how does the the pkg extractor work and if it's possible, how would I go about making something that can make pkg files.

It's essentially just a container for a .self file and other needed files for the program. There is a header on it that states what version of firmware it will work for (or that might be what keys were used to sign it). That's about the extent of my knowledge on the subject though.

errr pkg package file contains an executable and files need to run it.

I know I could use some one else's tools, but I'm trying to make my own so I know how they work and more importantly, I can tweak them.

That's why I'm interested in how they are made and how they can be broken down.

I already am. This was just a pet idea. I'm guessing there isn't any good documentation on the format quite yet. When there is, I'll defiantly make a better pkg maker.

Nice info, I'm going to try playing with InstallDirectory and see if I can make PSN packs that install to the lower path without a program that moves them.

What I wish the pkg tools would do, is split at the 4gb boundary. It's a pain setting the files up to be under that limit. That and the PS3 side program that re-merges files that are bigger than 4gb. (Which I'm proud of now that it's working as intended)

Well, with any luck some one will figure out how to get NTFS running for the XMB so my PKG size can be as big as I want it to be. That or I make a 7z for the PS3 with a set of progress indicators so I can just Compress the game and install the 7z files and then have it uncompress them system side. So many different ways to reach the same outcome.
