Using outdated Games online! You can!
Using outdated Games online! You can! –

I'm using Call of Duty Black Ops online right now with CFW Rebug 3.55.2.7 To do so all I did was install the latest game update from the PSN then use a file manager to replace the eboot.bin file with the one from the disc and things work great! So yeah people start trying other games!
The updates are stored on the internal HDD in the Game folder. it's labeled by disc ID. Have fun!
Ok here is a step by step.
1. Use multiman to download and install the latest 3.55 compatible update for your game. (if there is one go to step 2a otherwise use step 2b
2a obtain the latest working eboot for your game from this directory
HDD0/Game/(GameID)/USRDIR/
and save it to your usb drive. the file manager for multi man is ideal for this!
2b You will have to use the original eboot as its the latest working one.
3 run your game and update it to the latest version.
4 use MMCM file manager to replace the newly updated eboot in
HDD0/Game/(GameID)/USRDIR/
with the one we backed up earlier or our original whichever be the case.
(sometimes the GameID might not match your disc id if you are using a patched Eboot file for example in newer games loading the Param.SFO file from the disc with PS3SFO editor should tell you the correct GameID.)
Anyone wanna Play?
So far it has worked with
My patched Sonic Generations game
Original Call Of Duty Black Ops (worked with game loaded from multiman too)
Still trying more games Will keep updating this list as I figure out more!
And Please anyone that reads this and wants to help do so by testing your games with this method.

That's interesting, but wouldn't it be better to use the eboot from the latest 3.55 compatible update instead? There are some code differences and some features might not be available or like for MK9 you can play online, but you can't connect to an opponent. Have you tried using multiMAN to download the latest 3.55 patches and use pkgview to extract the eboot from there to use?

Indeed it would but I'm just working with the files I have. Either way. It will work. As long as the Eboot you are using loads under 3.55 the newer the better though. I'll update the post to indicate this.
I've updated the post with a step by step instruction set on how to do this. though frankly if multiman has an update for it can probably just spoof the param.sfo file in the update folder though my thinking was it be best to use the updated files as much as possible.

I was just curious if you've been able to play any and all opponents or just others that have done this. Had to take my PS3 offliine for a couple days so I can't check myself

I'm about to try joining an online game with random users lets see what happens.
It fails to work........ Bum deal.... so far no online play with random people.
Perhaps its trying to use files that arent meant to work with that eboot file.... I'll try a few things.....

I'd be interested in seeing if you can play other users that have the same version update/eboot mod that you do. If you have Mortal Kombat 9 and futuretime23's 1.05 patch I'm sure he'd be willing to try to connect with you

My game crashed when I opened up the mutiplayer tab and went to play online in black ops.... I'm trying another method.....
Perhaps replacing the entire USRDIR folder will prove to work a little better.
Looking at the USRDIR folder for blackops shows two .self files which I'm betting are 3.60 plus files and I'm trying to replace them and see what happens.
Well that didn't help. It seems the game cant find the black ops server..... I did get it to stop crashing.... either way no online joy for black ops though.... It's a nice way t6o get rid of those annoying update messages though!

If you just want to get rid of those pop-ups you can just edit the PARAM.SFO in the /game/**GAMEID** folder to match the latest update
Edit: After editing the first time you run the game you'll still get the pop-up, but every time after the pop-up will be gone. The database has to be updated

yeah it's certainly not worth the effort... I'm trying to figure out whats making it fail to see the latest server.
