    I don't know if this has been brought up already, I haven't seen it anywhere. Does anyone think that in the future it may be possible to use the PS3 (with homebrew) to format an external drive to the PS3 internal format? Thus helping eliminate some of the incompatibilities.
    PS2 V7 = Exploit, 320GB Seagate HD.
    Wii = Softmodded+BootMii Boot2
    PS3 = Caught on fire..
    XBOX360 = Unmodded
    Nintendo DSI XL = Unmodded

    you can already format drives in ps3 format to work on usb.... it doesnt help you any though.

    just take a hdd, and install it to your ps3 with a sata extension cable and external power (from a usb enclosure or something) turn on ps3 format it, remove it reinsert original hdd and put the thing in the usb enclosure.

    again, it doesnt help much but this is what you wanted

    Wouldn't this get round the problem of files being too big for the external HDD?

    No idea. Because until a few days ago, there was no way to read any files off of the internal PS3 hard drive. I don't know if the FTP program supports USB drives, but if it does, you could possibly try that.

    It does support USB drives.

    Question is if the PS3 can write to it over USB with that file system.

    Currently the PS3 will only read usb drives formatted to FAT32. The internal drive inside of the PS3 is formatted ext2/3 (correct me if I'm wrong here).

    FAT32 doesn't support files larger than 4gb thus the difference between the internal and external.

    There are devices that allow you to use a 3.5" external hard drive as the internal drive (google HDXT).

    The hope is in the future they'll create an option to use NTFS through USB.

    does that work with the Slim as well?

    damn that's pretty cool, never heard of that before. so that means we can get a 2TB+ HDD. is there a limit to how much the PS3 can read/support

    I have one in shipment right now. If you do look at ordering make sure you don't use the free shipping (1 - 3 weeks). I ordered it 10 days ago (shipped 7 days ago) -- I live 3.5hrs south of their location....

    The Internal HDD is UFS2 not ext2.
