I know there is a similar topic to this, but it doesn't quite answer my question...

So basically my Logic board is kaput (broken), well im not sure actually my ps3 doesn't read games or play demos all i get is a black screen when launching any application except the PSN Store, but lets say the logic board is the issue here could i just go and buy a 2nd hand logic board of ebay (same model to what i have got) and just plug n play onto my ps3?

This ps3 is a 40gb model and is on OFW 3.73, ive also got a 80gb CFW ps3 on 3.55. Is there any possibility i could remarry the logic board on OFW 3.73?

If the drives are the same you can take the one from the 80 GB and put the logic board from the 40 GB on it. Then take the logic board from the 40 GB drive and remarry it to the 80 GB on 3.55.

Of course it would be simpler to just remarry the one on 3.73 but I can't answer whether or not it can be done easily.

My guess is it's the laser that has crapped out on you.

I don't think so because you have to go into service mode and you can't get out of service mode on 3.73

    1) Before you do anything drastic, try removing the Blu-Ray Drive and then check the ribbon cable is not kinked or snapped at all.

    2) IF it looks good, then try reinstalling the drive, making sure that the ribbon cable and the power cable a secure and instered properly and then try play games.

    3) If still nothing then try removing the logic board from the drive and connect just the board with the power cable and the big ribbon cable onto the ps3 motherboard.

    4) Check what happens when you insert a game disc, does it show up on the XMB? does the clock in the top right corner continuosly spin? can you see the blue light flashing on the console?

If the blue light comes on when a disc is inserted, then the drive should be fine, but it may be your logic board. ( I MAY BE WRONG, ITS HARD TO TELL WITHOUT SEEING WHAT IT DOES)

If you end up needing to re-marry the logic board then you need to downgrade via hardware. The firmware needs to be below 3.2(3.15 of lower) to perform the drive init.

There are various guide on the internet about how to do downgrade to 3.55 but not straight to 3.15. I am today testing if i can go from 3.73 to 3.55 and then dongle downgrade to 3.15 specifically for this purpose. Im not sure if the 3.73 syscon check will stop this from working.

Ill post a guide when i know what happens =)

Hi Drifta, i'm pretty much having the same problems as m477uk, recently picked up a faulty PS3 60 gb fatty which i thought just had a dead laser, so replaced the laser with a brand new laser and still no go, the drive is taking in and ejecting the discs fine and the disc is spinning inside the drive too but it doesnt appear in the xmb, all i get is the clock turning round and round. When playing an Audio disc eventually a disc icon appears in the xmb but if you try to play the tracks it says data is corrupted. lol

So anyway heres what i have tried so far, I tested this drive and laser in another PS3 and it loaded every disc, audio, dvd, blu ray, ps1, ps2 and ps3 Games. I tried the ribbon cable from my other PS3 in this console and still the same, and vice versa.
So my guess is the Logic board is either Dead or not paired to this motherboard, luckily for me the firmware is on 3.55 so i'm hoping I can remarry a new controller board to it.
I installed otherOS 3.55 firmware hoping to get QA Flag on this system so I Could downgrade it but when I Launch it the system does not beep as it should and just black screens. It also black screens on anything installed on the hard drive i.e multimann etc
1 other thing I also deliberately paired up the wrong logic board to the drive to see what happens and it behaves the same, does not load anything and still get the clock spinning in the top corner which i thought was odd as i thought that if you see the clock spin then it indicates that the system has the correct logic board for the console?? can anyone verify this??

So now my question is where do i go from here? Should i just give up or is there still hope for this console??

Theres still hope mate I guess the spinning clock may be something it does when the board isnt paired. Because your drive isnt paired, homebrew (linux, qa_flag.pkg ,etc) wont run.

From here it looks like your only hope is a Service Mode Downgrade. For that you are unfortunately going to need a dongle with service mode Hex flashed to it (search PSgrade).

Download these files here <-- click the link to download

The following is a tut posted in the 3.55 downgrade thread. You can find the full thread HERE (SERVICE MODE DOWNGRADING - 3.55 [OUTDATED]). All credits go to the sorrowuk for the original post.

NOTE: If you have a NAND console you may risk getting the "Blu-Ray Playback Prohibited" Which is fairly unavoidable, seeing you cant read discs or backup dev_flash3 as homebrew wont load.

    2) While still OFF connect your Jailbreak/Downgrade device and press POWER then quickly Eject, you PS3 console should turn itself off automatically

    3) OPTIONAL - Turn your PS3 on to verify you are in Service Mode (you will see a big red box, you can't miss it) then turn your PS3 back OFF

    4) Place the lv2diag.self (FILE 1) from the archive and the PS3UPDAT.PUP (3.41 FW) from the archive on the root of a usb device and plug into the rightmost port on your console (dev_usb0)

    5) Power on your PS3 with the usb device in and have a coffee, it can take a few moments for the PUP to install, your PS3 will turn off automatically
NOTE: if your system seems unresponsive and the light just stays green for ten minutes or more you need to use a different usb stick. i've had sporadic results with several different sticks.

    6) Power your ps3 back on, you should still be in service mode, check your FW version now to verify you have downgraded successfully. Turn off.

Once you have completed the above process you will be on a modified 3.41 that has it's vsh changed to 3.56 (was needed in order to downgrade from 3.55). If you plan to stay on 3.41 you can stay on this firmware. If you ever plan on upgrading to a higher firmware you will need to go through the downgrade process again, but this time have a OFW on your thumbdrive that is less then 3.41 (Ex 3.40, 3.20, 3.15) but higher then the version that came on your console. You can use the same files from this post, but your PS3UPDAT.PUP must follow the rules above.
    {FROM HERE YOU SHOULD REPLACE THE MODIFIED 3.41 PUP WITH A ORIGINAL 3.15 PUP AND FOLLOW THE TUT FROM STEP 5 TO DOWNGRADE TO 3.15}

Then you need to perform the drive init while in service mode. Here is a link Webbers Remarry drive thread, originally found here. (Finally Remarry BD Drives To Other Consoles)

Download the remarry files HERE and extract them to the desktop.

    1) Copy the files inside the dev_usb000 folder to the root of a fat32 formatted usb stick.

    2) Plug the usb stick into the usb port closest to the blu-ray drive and turn the console on. It should turn on and show a screen like this: [/QUOTE]Attachment 31848

    3) It may turn off when it completes. Turn the console back on and insert a ps3 game to see if the console can read it.

    4) If all went well you can now play games and load homebrew again, CONGRATULATIONS! now you can exit service mode and update. Follow the rest of surrowuk's guide to exit service mode.

    9) Turn PS3 back on with usb in place, it should turn itself off very shortly after.

    10) Turn your PS3 back on and go through the configuration again.

What I would do, in this order.....

    1) Check all connections are good

    2) Test another laser (most likely to fail opposed to being logic board issue)

    3) Buy a replacment logic board, then remove the IC on your old board, reball it and transfer it to the new one logic board (no software remarrying needed and no loss of BD playback).

    Done.

Hi the connections are fine, i did try two working blu ray drives on the console with the logic board that came with the console and the symptoms are the same, can load, eject discs fine, the motor inside the blu ray drive spins the disc so i know the laser mech is working but nothing shows up in the xmb therefore i believe that the logic board is not paired to this motherboard. So option 3 would not work for me because im 99.9% certain i have the incorrect logic board to begin with, marrying the nand chip to a working board still wont work as its the wrong board to begin with. I dont think the board itself is faulty. I suppose i could try option 3 and if it fails to work then i will be certain its the wrong logic board, then i will just have to go the downgrading route.

ps to mrdrifta thank you so much for the help! Gona give it a try once i get the dongle
