I have two PS3's with slighty the same problem.
The first one is my PS3: my father replaced the compound and it's worked fine for the past week, but it began again. It stays on for about 10min and then shuts off with the flashing red lights.
The second one: my father bought off craig's list with the flashing red light already as the problem. This one I replaced the compound. My father said he tested it before I took it apart and said there was no interface and flashing red lights immediately showed up. The same problem occurred after I replaced the compound.

If anyone has suggestions or think both PS3's are doomed, please help me out :3

Do them happen to be CECH-25xx ?

These units have a problem that causes the GPU to start drawing too much current (and overheating) and the only fix is replace the actual GPU. They shutdown with thermal incident (overheat).

Also it's possible that the thermal sensor might have malfunctioned. But if you had a transistor or resistor blow on the voltage converting stage it's very likely the GPU is in process of shorting out. Only permanent fix is replace the GPU chip completely.

If I replace my GPU, will it delete everything on my PS3?
And which one are you asking about the CECH-25xx?

As long it's the same PS3 as before, no it won't delete anything. It should work perfectly once the problem is solved.

Using factory tools to restore the system do destroy harddrive data, though.

So if you send it out for repair and are unsure if the people who will work it will keep your data, make sure you send it with another harddrive.
