Hello people, I bought a 60gb whose bluray drive wouldn't suck in my disc and seemed to be completely dead.

I tried updating firmware but it got stuck for a about a month, i bought a new bluray drive (swapped logic boards) and even though it didn't work the first time, about a week after switching drives my firmware updated.

Sadly, this new drive seemed as dead as my old one, and since I know this one works, I figured the problem was something else. This assertion was justified when I downloaded a PSN game and froze with a black screen when I launched it. I inspected the ps3 and noticed the blue ray ribbon end that connected to the motherboard had black marks where some of those yellow things are (if you haven't been able to tell by know, I'm not very experienced with this stuff)

Now that seems like the logic thing I should replace next, but could a damaged blue ray ribbon leave every function of my bluray not to work and me not being able play anything. Could I also have a bad logic board, or need a new power cable? Is it possible the problem lies with something else not concerning the bluray?

I should note the ps3 comes on fine, connects to wifi, can download stuff off PSN, but like I said, a black screen when I launch whatever I download. Also I but my bluray drive in the position when there's a disc inside and the blue light stays on, so my ps3 can sense that.

    Sorry for my noobishness

You must have a working logic board attached to the console to actually run any apps/games......

    Half wrong.

You need a working *married* logic board attached to the console to actually boot anything.

I'm aware of the need of a logic board, I put the logic board from the original onto the new one I bought, and since my firmware updated with it I assumed that meant it was the original.

Im just wondering really whether a broken bluray ribbon can not make a single function of the bluray work (motor doesn't run, laser not on, won't grab disc).,and why the ps3 can sense my bluray being in the position where it thinks a disc is inside (permanent blue light).

I'm also thinking of replacing a power cable to the bluray if you guys tell me a bluray ribbon alone shouldn't the cause of a dead drive and no games.

    hey crusader,

could you ever figure out the actual problem? I'm asking because I just had the exact same thing happen to my Ps3. I was watching Lord of the Rings, switched it off, came back to it after a month and I couldn't access the PS Store or any downloaded game and then I noticed that the drive also wouldn't take or eject disks. The blue light doesn't come on at all, so I know it's not a problem with the drive itself. I am guessing some connector might be busted.

    Did you have any luck?

    **EDIT**
I just re-read what everyone said and after more research I guess I do have a broken logic board. I'll keep trying to figure out exactly what to do to fix the PS3 but if anyone has any advice I'd really appreciate it.

    Hey,
So, after I figured out I had a dead logic board I went ahead and found the model number and bought the same one off ebay. That's the good news. The bad news are pretty much everything that happened afterwards. I did my reading and from what I understood, I had 2 ways to tackle my problem:

    1. remove the bga chip from the original logic board and solder it to the new one. Then attach the new logic board to the BR Drive and voila! done
    2. swap logic boards and "remarry" them using the e3

I decided to go with my first option since it didn't require me spending ~100 bucks to get my ps3 working.

After I received the new logic board, I placed it in the PS3 to make sure it was functional. My BR Drive came back to life and would accept and eject disks again, but of course wouldn't play movies or games since it didn't have the right ID or whatever that is in the bga chip.

The next thing I did was swap chips. The only problem here was that, if anyone has seen the BMD-031 logic board, it doesn't seem to have the bga chip. Every picture and video I could find on the net shows boards with different configurations. In the end I had no choice but to do an educated guess , so I went for the chip that is on the bottom side of the BMD-031 board. It's a single chip with 6 connectors, and it's the only one there.

Now, I don't have much experience soldering but I tried my best, and in the end I didn't think the job was that bad, but the drive would not recognize the new chip and what's worse, it wouldn't take discs any more. I think that a) I didn't solder it correctly or b) I busted the chip with the heat gun or something.

Now, I was going through the forums again to give myself an idea of what I could do next, and came across someone that said that if you use a logic board that has exactly the same configuration as the one you are swapping it with, there is no need to remarry. I think that statement is completely wrong, but I wanted to double check. According to this person, all you have to do is, if the logic board has the same configuration, run system recovery and done.

Could anyone tell me if this is true, and if possible if I was correct about the chip I swapped? I can try attaching a picture if needed.

    Thanks a lot!

    Thanks psxpetey.

I did actually find that video before I did the whole soldering and resoldering, and tried to follow it, but again, the logic board they use is different than mine. Theirs has the "big" bga chip that is swapped. Mine didn't have the chip he was removing. I'm attaching a picture so that anyone can see how my logic board looks like (I put the chip I took out just on top of where it went). Do you happen to know if I was removing the correct one? I took out the one I've circled. I'm not 100% sure that's the correct one but I have a hunch it might be.
