PS3 Blu Ray Drive –
03-19-2011,12:14 AM
Hello everyone at PSX Scene just had a quick question and maybe you can guide me in the right direction. I have a 40gb ps3 and an 20gb ps3 both have their own original logic boards. The blu ray drive on the 40gb makes a weird noise when you boot the console up and a blue light flashes. I already know it's bad and I read somewhere the original blu ray drives are interchangeable as long as you have the original logic boards. Is that part true? I replaced the 40 gb blu ray drive with the 20 gb one, I am able to load discs but I am not able to see the disc icons. What issue may have I ran into?
Thank you.

Have a look in the news section, you can remarry the drives now.
Or you swap logic boards on the BD rom, keeping it matched with the PS3, its not 100% clear by your post if you swapped the 40 and the 60 logic boards around.

ahh yeah sorry about the incoherency i left the logic boards intact just swapped the working blu ray drive to the 40gb ps3 and I don't see any icons pop up like the discs or anything.
I saw the remarrying thread but I can't do that on the 40gb ps3, it was updated to 3.56 and as far as I know there isn't a way to downgrade atm.

So what firmware is the 20gig on then?

The 20 gb is on 3.15, from the looks of it swapping blu ray drives isn't just plug n play.

No its not, you either need to swap logic boards, eg the logic board stays with the PS3, or follow the remarry process if you can.
As it seems the one you want to have a working BD is on 3.56 your only option is to swap logic boards if they have compatible laser's. Otherwise, buy a new laser for the faulty one.
