Ok I'm gonna ask the obvious questions, how the **** did he obtain all this, and how can anyone in this scene use this unless we own 100+ PS3's?

That title is quite humorous. Anyways, this is useful even for one PS3. If I'm understanding this correctly, it's an openCL implementation to run on the SPUs. Basically anything that uses openCL should be as easy to port as a simple recompile. Or at least it should be that way, I think. I'm assuming it includes drivers for mutliple PS3 units as well.

Anyway, I'm a little confused. This isn't a true release of something new. I think all of this has been released over the past few years. The really interesting part of this, the openCLit package, has been available on IBM's site for a few months. The info seems to be mostly official documentation. Am I missing something?

EDIT: actually the MARS package might be one of the highlights, though it's a year old

im fairly certain most (if not all) of the documentation was publicly released by IBM.

Most of that is public documents. Also, it only takes someone with 2 ps3's to develop software with this and then release the app to the public for distributed computing tasks. They don't need to be side by side, take SETI or any other similar computing task. This could be used in a lot of cool ways, assuming a motivated dev picks this up.

I'm not really getting how this is related specifically to cluster computing?

It's just OpenCL which is a language/SDK you can use to execute programs across CPU, GPU and other processors. This appears to be the OpenCL SDK stuff for utilising cell with OpenCL.

I don't think it's necessarily *bad* for cluster computing, but unless I'm missing something then OpenCL itself isn't enough for that. It's not a message passing interface or anything like that....
It's a neat technology, I've been writing a fractal generator that uses my GPU to draw fractals on to OpenGL textures, and having it available for Cell is pretty cool.

Or it would be if I hadn't got my PUPs mixed up and installed 3.60 the other day
