    Hey guys,

I've been searching forums for the past few days trying to find answers but always being sent back to the safe mode option which for some reason won't work on my ps3.

My problem is this, I get audio but only sometimes get video, I've tried both component and HDMI outputs.
Sometimes I can get to the wave at the start up screen using AV but it always freezes when the writing comes up.
With the HDMI nothing comes up so I use the video reset procedure and I get the reset screen, at this point I try to make a selection and the controller doesn't respond not sure if it's because it's frozen on this screen and that's what's causing the lack of response.

I'm not sure why my ps3 won't access safe mode, I suspect it could be because it hasn't had an update in over 2 years and maybe the current firmware doesn't support safe mode.

I'm wondering is the freezing and lack of video a product of the YLOD? I don't know a lot about it and like I said, all other forums seem to point me back to safe mode and video resets which don't work!

    Any idea's?
    Thank you

the safe mode as you call it is on every ps3 to get into it press and hold the power button until it powers on then back off again then let go then press and hold again until you hear 3 beeps it should beep once then a double beep then it should display to insert your controller with a usb lead then you will have 5 options try them in order see what happens

    Hey badboyz80,

I've followed the instructions religiously but have had no luck getting to the menu, all that happens is that it turns itself back off again over and over, could this be because of a failed system update? I've never managed to get the double beep.

Im pretty sure you are just not doing it right....

hold down the power button until the ps3 beeps and then shuts off

then let go and hold it down again, until it beeps twice... let go... at this point it will go into recovery mode (or safe mode as you put it)

do this with only the AV cables pluged in

    then click restart PS3

it kinda sounds like you are having HDMI issues, I suggest another cable or possibly trying it on a different tv set if you cant get it into safe mode to switch it from HDMI to AV

as far as componant cables go... the same thing would apply... (switching from HDMI to componant)

if your video card is failing, you usually get some type of error message....

if this procedure doesn't reset you're display settings (doesn't for me) try substituting Restore Defaults for Restart PS3

timwillbur - your console needs the RSX/CPU/Southbridge reflowing. Intermittent video & audio problems on boot up are NOT firmware related.

Your console is in the 'pre-YLOD' state - sometimes it works, sometimes it won't. I bet in a few days time it will YLOD altogether...

Thanks for your help, was hoping I wouldn't have to reflow the board! Just waiting on some compound and I'll try it.

Be carefull pulling the heatsink off the the board as it'll be stuck solid if it's cold. You're best off running the machine for a few minutes to warm up the old compound up so the heatsink comes of without having to force it.
I've seen many people cause more damage this way...
