Is the PS3 drive capable of reading HD DVDs if an application were made?
Nope, unfortunately not. BD/HD drives for PC's are fairly cheap now though. Saw that Newegg had one for sale for $40 the other day.
I wonder if before you posted this you searched in google to see the diffenrence between HD DVD and BD Driver, the laser is diferent, to start with. And since sony was never on the hd dvd and was on BD. I dont think what you ask is even sensible to ask.:cry::cry::cry::crazy::crazy::crazy:
better question is why? hd dvd is dead
Hey calm down guys.
I only asked because I remembered hearing that aparrently it could if an appropriate application was made for it.
i see no issues for an ext usb hd-dvd drive if the right app was created. its only gotta be a few drivers to get running if even.
Don't get me wrong, but did you?
Is it? Afaik, it is the SAME laser-type, which is also 'running' on the same 'light-wave-lenght' in 'deep violet' with 405Nanometer (Ultraviolet is within the 10-400Nanometer-range).Quote:

The only difference between them (that I'am aware off) is, the data-dye is @0,1Millimeter on a bluray and @0,6Milimeter (like on CD and DVD) on an HD-DVD...
The other thing was the density of HD-DVDs wasn't that high, if I remember correctly.

It is correct that both drives do use the same 405nm laser. The major difference is indeed the track pitch, This is not only a difference on the physical media but also within the pickup apertures which are technically incompatable. Not only do they differ in capacity, they differ largely in layer depth. This is the reason current DVD factories required major equipment overhauls in order to press Blu-ray's while little upgrade was necessary for HD-DVD's. HD-DVD's could also be read in a DVD player for this reason.
So in short, No. The PS3's internal drive is definitely not capable of reading HD-DVD's. Perhaps an external solution would be possible, But the necessity of this option is largely overshadowed by the discontinuation of HD-DVD media and drives.
