    Hey guys,

I recently had a friend give me a PS3 that was not working. I turned it on and it was trying to resume a cancelled update or something. I read a few posts and tried a different hard drive. I put the new one in and it asked to format and install firmware 3.70 or higher, before I formatted I swapped out the hard drives so that it would format the old one. It reached 99% formatting and stopped. I assumed that the hard drive was bad. So I put the new one back in and went through the whole formatting process, it completed and proceeded to install firmware step after a reboot. The problem is that when it checks the firmware after the reboot it says that it is corrupted. I have tried downloading the latest firmware update (4.11) four times on two different computers and four different flash drives and I still get the same error every time, sometimes it even comes before the reboot.

I'm starting to think that it has something to do with the firmware on the nor chip (3.70 I'm assuming) and the firmware I'm trying to install or something to do with the cancelled update that I had to deal with in the first place. If you have no other suggestions, could someone link me to the 3.70 firmware update? I want to try installing that and see what happens.

    Thanks,

    -JC

I can't really post outside links i know some sites don't allow it need to read the rules. Anyway it most likely has to do with nor chip on your ps3 but at the sametime I'm not 100% sure i had this problem along time ago and ended up sending it to sony.

Suggestion 1: Try to do it again since you reached 99% the last time
Suggestion 2: Sell it on ebay for parts
Suggestion 3: Sounds like a NOR problem (something that you cant fix) take it to someone that can replace the ps3 main motherboard but then again that will take more time and money to do. (100% would fix your problem) but to save yourself some time try Suggestion 1 if that fails try Suggestion 2

Damn your friend is nice to give you a ps3 LOL (even though it doesnt work)

    Completely fixable without replacing motherboard.

I had that too, sometimes you have to take the battery out short the +- together on the brd. it resets the pross.

Don't do this as it's utter crap... Removing the RTC battery resets the time & date only. Nothing special.

mad mike 96 - someone has tried to downgrade the PS3 and failed, the only way to repair it would be by hardware flasher (progskeet etc)

I offer a downgrade/unbrick service in the UK - search google for 'downgrade/unbrick' (ps3news link about 4th down)

This definitely wasn't a failed downgrade, I know the previous owner... I think it was just a bad firmware update.

I bought an e3 flasher but I was unable to get the clip on right, now I think I ended up wrecking it. I'm thinking about soldering the e3 linker on.... I found a picture with my board (DIA-002_by_DiscoBear) with the points marked, my question, there's a ton of ground points marked, do I need to connect all of them to my e3 linker and if I do, does it matter which one goes where?

Another question... my current soldering iron doesn't have a fine enough tip for this job, can someone recommend something fairly inexpensive that will get the job done? I'll also need wire and solder, I can't post links yet (I had tons of posts before the merge of psgroove ), I found a couple things on eBay.. the ps3devwiki seggests 24 AWG wire and 63/37 solder.
