If you have the directory of files on the Blu-Ray set up as GAMEZ\BLxSxxxxx, then it should work perfectly. Not just with Blu-Ray external drives, but DVD external drives as well. Wouldn't the PS3 just read it as if it is a USB drive? Basically I think you've just figured out a way people can play games via a blank disc, except it obviously requires an external drive rather than using the PS3's actual drive.
As for your theory of whether an external drive can be redirected, I'm not so sure. I think the actual PS3 drive is required for authentication purposes, and a way to bypass this hasn't been figured out (otherwise we'd be able to play all games without a disc perfectly).
