All right, I don't have enough experience to build this myself, but recently I realized that downloading the PS3 hdd to the PC via FTP is a pain when there are tens of thousands of files, and it goes much slower doing for example 20,000 1MB files rather than one 20GB file since it has to switch from file to file. So, that led me to this idea. A homebrew app that zips the contents of hdd0 up, and then it will be much easier to transfer to the PC (since it will just be 1 file instead of thousands). Also, the app should have the ability to unzip files as well, so when you restore a zipped hdd0 file from your PC to the PS3, you can use the app to unzip the contents, which will make the whole process easier.

Let me know what you guys think. I think it would be fairly easy to build.

    Thanks.

Doesn't the backup and restore built into the PS3 already compress and store in large chunks?

The backup and restore still takes a day to do a 120gb disk.

Yes, but you need an external hard drive to back it up onto. For those of us that don't have external hard drives that are large enough, it's perfect to be able to backup onto the PC.

How much faster would zipping up thousands that add up to 20GB+ on a system that has 256MB of RAM? I don't see saving much time over all.

It would be much EASIER. Might not be that much faster. But sitting there and the FTP screwing up after every 1000 or so files and kicking me out and me having to restart the server manually is really annoying. If it was 1 file it would transfer much easier, and faster, granted that the actual zipping would take some time like you said, but it would simplify it.
