For PS2: DVDDecrypter, Alcohol, Recordnow max and Nero *CloneCd + CDRWin if you need CD backups aswell*
For DVD: DVDDecrypter if you do not have to recompress the movie and CloneDVD, DVDFab and DVDShrink if you need reencode aswell. Other softwares may also do the task, but at least for me these are the best ones.

thanks for the advice, dvddecrtper seems straight forward, I guess nothing to do other than to copy over and then copy to disc, no settings to alter etc.

as for movies dont know about compression and reencode as never heard of them before so will have to spend some time searching, thanks

DVD movies are usually bigger than 4.3 GB as a single layer DVD can store. Then after you decrypted the files, you have two choices: 1, use two single layer disks to store the movie or reencode the movie to fit onto one disk. This later will result in a small quality loss, but will costs only one disk. (you probably have to remove the menu, other language files, other sound streams *if there is any of course* and other extras aswell) CloneDVD is a perfect tool for doing this task.

Dual layer disks cost a lot and it is not worth using these in my opinion. (at the moment) Their readability + reflectivity are much worse than any single layer media. If you wanna use them, you better set your booktype (if your writer supports it) to DVD-ROM for maximum compatibility.

I used DVDXCopy one year ago, but it is very limited, plus I had several installation problem, not to mention the cases when I had to reinstall that every two weeks, as the expert mode did not work anymore, and the simple mode is just as limited like hell. DVDCloner is said to be another useless program, the creators just wanted to grab some money, so I think you'd avoid these. I suggest to use DVDShrink, CloneDVD or DVDFab.

    regards, Stephen

pS: anyone suggested Alcohol, please gimme an advice how to copy any protected movie, and how to encode movies using it ? Alcohol is a great program to make a copy of a backup, but not to make a backup of an original...
