Sadly I'd have to say, I bought a Verbatim spindle of 15 DVD-Rs for around $25 last week at office depot. And my Version4 PS2 doesn't even read it! The only media I've gotten to work on it were TDKs and Riteks!
I just used Nero Speed and this is what I got:
Manufacturer : Taiyoyuden
Code : -
Disc Type : DVD-R
Usage : General
Recording Layer : -
Recording Speed : 1 X - 2 X
Capacity : -
Additional Capacity : -
Overburn Capacity : -
Is it my PS2 at fault? or did I get the "ghetto" version of the Verbatims?
Dude, this is weird because TaiyoYuden isn't supposed to manufacture Verbatim discs!
Could you check the media ID code with that app and report here what it gives?

A weirder thing is that TaiyoYuden is one of the best japanese company when it comes to quality CD/DVD-R media.
So they should run like a dream!
After TDK media ID, maybe some lousy manufacturer began to fake TaiyoYudens!?
(fake TDK info : http://www.tdk-europe.presscentre.co...ess%20Releases )
Later,
Alcahest
This is what I Have:
A wierd thing is that most if not all the advanced functions return an error saying "INVALID REQUEST. INVALID FIELD IN CDB"
Does that have anything to do with the DVD-R not being able to be read by my ps2? Thanks.

Yeah this is normal, no worries there. It has nothing to do with the disk's quality.

As i just told you on IRC, these really seem fakes.
1. TaiyoYuden doesn't manufacture DVDs for Verbatim.
2. you bought them insanely cheap on a spindle.
If you want to make sure to get guenuine Verbatim High Quality disks, get them in jewel boxes.
Later,
Is there somewhere online that has a list of manufacturer codes? The Verbatims -R I got report back as CMC, like was stated in this thread. The +R's I got report back as Ricoh.
My Compusa -R's report back as LD01
My Apple's report back as MXLRG01
Just curious as to who they are.
Heya RalphWiggum.
You could check this :

Thanks a ton.

Ya should have stated they are DVD+R only. At least at the Sam's Club I went to (and I made a special trip with my stepdad, mind you, because I don't have a membership), they only had DVD+R.
There were no DVD-Rs in sight. I always assume -R if nothing is specified.
Just went to another local Sam's Club today and confirmed - they only carry DVD+ media. No DVD- media in sight.
However...they did have Mitsu DVD+Rs on the 15 spindles. I recognized from the tops and they were also labeled "DataLifePlus."
