  1. #1 Exclamation Verbatim DVD+ or -R for $1.09 each

I saw this advertised in yesterday's Office Depot circular. Verbatim Datalife Plus DVD+R and DVD-R 15-Pack spindles are on sale for $32.77 per pack, plus they're BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE this week. They are limiting it to one purchase per day per customer but it's still a sweet deal.

I just got around to looking at the circular this evening - hope there are some left at the local store!

Well, damn. Just got back from Office Depot with 60 of these Verbatims and I've made my first coaster in 100+ burns (all the rest have been with generic white tops from Meritline, which they no longer carry). I ran Nero CD Speed and this is what is says:

    Manufacturer : CMC
    Code : CMC MAG.
    Disc Type : DVD-R
    Usage : General
    Recording Layer : -
    Recording Speed : 1 X - 2 X
    Capacity : 4.38 GB
    4706076672 Bytes
    Additional Capacity : -
    Overburn Capacity : -

I don't know who "CMC" is, but it clearly isn't Verbatim. These are going back pronto.

On another note, anyone know of anywhere with white tops in stock for less than $1.50? I hear good things about the Ritek G04, but I don't want to pay $2.00+.

Seen that on some old CD-R's: CMC Media or something like that--fab's for Verbatim, Maxell, and others on the cheap side. Usually more reliable then Princo....but still..........

They might be ok at 1X though, who knows?

If it ain't broke don't try to fix it! But, hell if you can tweak that bastard just a little bit more....hehehe.

Yeah a similar thing happened to me at Best Buy a while back...bought a 15 spindle of Verbatims and I didn't have much luck with them.

I was always under the impression that they were one of the sourcers for Apple DVD-Rs (which are highly regarded) so I figured I'd save a little dough and buy from the source...guess I got an unlucky spindle.

I think your Ritek G03 or G04 route is much "safer" - I've always had great quality burns and results from them...and I've been through about 3 spindles of it.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to order the G04's. With DVD cases, they are $107/50 pack including shipping ($2.14 each).

Must be a batch thing...if you get 'em from the right batch they're all good.

The ones that are shown in the ad look exactly like the ones I use. I burn at 2X and have about 70 burned with no coasters. Maybe it's the same label with different media. I tried to run NERO on the disc but it doesn't show any info. Which test do you run and does the disc need to be blank?

ok, to clear things up :
Verbatim uses 2 manufacturers, one for HQ media, and the other for cheap ones.
The HQ media manufacturer is none other than Mitsubishi Chemicals (Japan)
The ID Media code for those shows "MCC". These are trully awesome products (real Metal Azo dye) but the price is high.
They usually come in jewel cases, *NOT* spindles.
The low cost Verbatim DVDs are produced by CMC Magnetics (ID Media code : "CMC"). They come in spindle and are, imho, crappy, but still way better than princos.
    Later,

    Alcahest

So this is why Apple DVD-R media is the HQ Verbatim stuff...cuz it is always in jewels?
