Yup, they are finally shipping. Meritline.com and Verbatim's own website estimate that these should be in stock within the next day or two. The price is pretty comparable to their D/L DVD+R discs. Anyways the other bit of good news is that there is a new version of Nero coming out which supports LJR (Layer Jump Recording) which allows D/L DVD-R to write to both layers simultaneously. This helps improve compatibility among other things. The real bonus here is that this might be the answer for those who are having issues with the Toxic D/L patch that is currently available. Here is the full article:

They are currently out of stock but newegg is carrying the 4x Verbatim D/L DVD-R discs at a relatively fair price. $22 shipped for a 3 pack.

Quite fair price... Compatibility was not the best though. *writting quality as the usual Verbatim quality is excellent*

That is why the Nero update that I have listed is so critical.

Which one supposedly has the better compatibility for PS2 DVD9 back-ups, DVD-R/DL or DVD+R/DL? I know there are only a few DVD9 games out there right now...

As far as DVD5 back-ups, it seems most people found DVD-R's having better compatibility, especially on older PS2's.

At this point high quality D/L DVD+R (Verbatim/Mitsubishi Chemicals) with the booktype set to DVD-ROM is the most compatible. However, I would say that might change when they release the Nero update with LJR in the next 2-3 weeks. As it sits right now D/L backups have to be patched (unless you have a chip or an HD Upgrade that supports it) and not everyone is having good luck with them (even when using a good burner with the booktype set to DVD-ROM and quality media), so that is why the D/L DVD-R being burned with the LJR technology is such an appealing option.

So what brand burners support D/L DVD-R burning? I have a Pioneer DVR-109 with firmware update to v1.50. I know it supports D/L DVD+R but can it burn D/L DVD-R?

Yes, The Pioneer 109 supports burning to D/L DVD-R right out of the box and it will definitely do it with the 1.50 update.

Yes your burner supports writing DVD-R DL. Anyway many new drives support this quite new format, mainly with latest firmware upgrades.
