I have'nt had any problems with Apple DVD-r's. Memorex are flakey. Pioneer DVD-r's are'nt bad either. Apple work the best for me even work good for dvd movies. I burnt some movies to memorex dvd-r's and had nothing but trouble with them. The memorex work fine in my Samsung dvd player though. The ps2 well at least mine need's a laser adjustment. When they put together these ps2's they only put the cd/dvd in the tolerance so they can boot origional ps2 cd/dvd games. Since dvd-r's probably have different tolerances then what the ps2 is set for some dvd-r's will work good such as Apple and others such as memorex will skip and such and won't load.

The first game I burned was Amored Core (Jap ver.) in Oct 2000. I just chipped my - 3901 unit with the Apple chip and popped it and there and it read with no problems. This disc has been sitting around for 2 years and it worked. It's a pioneer 3.95 media burned using Prassi DVD rep on a DVR-S201 drive. This backup worked on my - 1500 Jap system about 2 yrs ago, but I had to use a swap technique. I'm happy that it works with my US system now. So point is, Pioneer media is great and Primo is a spin off of the progie that I used 2 yrs ago (but better). Check your recording speed. By the way, did you even get any DVD-R backups to work with your unit? I noticed that you only mentioned cd-r backups. Thus, if you can not confirm that there's a chance that your unit probably wouldn't work with any DVD-R backup anyway then your mod was not modded properly to support DVD-R media.

PS: as far as MAX being your only burning option... That's not true.. There's a check box under recorder options that lets you check the default to MAX or uncheck it. When you uncheck that box then next time you open the progie it will allow you to scroll the tab and see that other speeds your drive supports.. So check the recorder options and uncheck that box that describes your recorders writing speed.

Brands of DVD-R blanks that you've tried? -only Memorex so far
The speed at which you burned them? -MAX, no other selection that MAX.

Hotshots GOlf3 is in dvdrom format since it has the dvd symbol on back. Its close to 2 gigs. I guess i will try another brand and see what happens.

FYI -- You're the 3rd person in this forum to openly admit using Memorex DVD-R blanks and to having problems.

Memorex blanks have always been kinda iffy in most PS2s and I guess even more so now. I know I certainly wouldn't recommend them to anyone now-a-days...
