i just wanna know, what is the real image if a dvd. im not talking about .iso. i know that raw image if audio cd is .wav. but what about dvd? is it mpeg2? or something else. also, how do i compress it and what should I compress it to? i know i should compress audio to .mp3 but what about dvds. i wanna compress the dvd but lose very little quality as possibe cuz i really care about quality. its like having a 320 kbps mp3, not 192kbps but for dvd.

Also, what is a divx entension and how do i convert it to dvd format? thank you. suggest me some freeware or even some sharewares cuz i got quite some money to waste.

This should be in off topic, but yes DVD is mpeg2. Read Doom9 for guides to convert divx to DVD, or compressing DVD files.

ok. avi is a video standard that supports MANY different compression codecs. divx is one type of compression codec that some avis are compressed with. .divx files are just .avi files. (the extensions are interchangable)

on the quality issue: the divx codec provides excellent compression that allows people to create very small (in comparison) video files that are the same quality as dvds.

yes divx is mpeg4 and dvd is mpeg2

just read alot on doom9. its an excellent site with tons of tutorials. just read, read, read!

(www.dvdrhelp.com is also a good site)

now im lost. i read the doom9.org and it gave me a headache. so how can u tell if the file is divx or regular .avi? also is divx the best compression for dvd? and can i use tmpgenc plus to convert divx avi's to mpeg 1/2?

now im really confused. if divx is mpeg4 then why doesnt it have that extension? why doess it have the .avi extension? god i am so confused

also, when you convert a dvd into divx, do u lose all the special features? do you just end up with the movie, nothing else? and can you recommend me the best software that does this?

edit: is the quality of an svcd and dvd the same? if i had a dvd and svcd of the same movie, will i be able to tell the difference?

so many questions.. so little time.. ok lets start.

first of all. FILE EXTENSIONS DON'T MATTER!!!! for windows, all it does is allow windows to tell which program to open the file with. a .divx file is really just an .avi file!! (ie. i press rename on a file and make it .divx from .avi) you can change back and forth it wont matter.

divx doesnt have the mpeg4 extension because the creators used the general avi format and made their own compression codec.

yes, you lose all the special features. you get the movie and nothing else.
read this tutorial on encoding: http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main3.htm
its not that easy to do it! well i think it is, but you want something thats one click. sorry that doesnt exist.

SVCD and VCD quality are terrible. you can VERY VERY VERY VERY (i think thats enough) tell the difference b/w a dvd and a VCD. DIVX videos are MUCH higher quality.

Get a program called G Spot on doom9, it will analyse an avi and tell you what codec was used for both audio and video.
