True that V7 PS2's hate DVD-R?
True that V7 PS2's hate DVD-R? –

Hey guys I need some help here. I'm getting a V7 PS2, but I hear that they are picky with some DVD media. To be more specific, they like DVD+R but bearly run DVD-R. Would V7 owners please tell me what they are using.
I plan on using Verbatim(nothing then the best) DVD-R media for my new V7 by the way. DVD-R tend to be 1/2 the cost of DVD+R, so I would prefer to use DVD-R.
Thanks for helping the new guy out.

You have it backwards. They like DVD-R and barely like DVD+R.

Actually that's an observation I made of users with V7 PS2's in another forum. I just wanted to see what the majority here say.
It could be just the quality of the media, but I just want to make sure.

The quality of the media definitely has an effect.

I've posted on this for a couple of times but here it goes again.
DVD-R seems to work better on older PS2 models (below V5).
DVD+R seems to work better on newer PS2 models (v5+).
I have a ton of backups on DVD-R and DVD+R and this is what I have experienced. I have a PAL V7 that reads both formats properly, but occasionally runs into booting problems with DVD-R. DVD+R is consistently better on that V7 than DVD-R. From what I've read, it's what most people are experiencing as well.
My older PS2s have it the other way around... a V4 I have can barely read DVD+R, but works flawlessly with DVD-R. I don't know the technical details behind this but most people believe DVD+R works better with a laser unit in proper conditions. That specific V4 I have has a lot of use. I've read around that the most recent PS2 models have better laser units than the older models, like the V1 or V2.
It all boils down to this, if you have a V7, you'll most likely want to use DVD+R. If it is more costly to you, use DVD-R, but should you run into any kind of problems, try the same backup on DVD+R. Also, use the best media possible. High reflectivity DVDRs.
Regards!

i've got a v7 pal.. and i haven't run into any problems yet(touch wood) with reading any dvd-r... i mainly use verbs though.. but I've also tested with princo media(cheap crap) and it also seemed to read fine...
just my experience,

edu20zip did you use the same brand for both DVD-R and DVD+R?

Let me just say that I got a V7 US PS2 with a Magic 2.
DVD-R from Verb sucks ass for me.
DVD+R from Memo works for me.
Although a little pricey (DVD+R) I dont mind the extra price if the loading rate is better.
There have been times when it would not load. But it is not the media. I use Verb and Memo which is considered high quality shit.
They do run from time to time (DVD-R) but if you asked me ... get a DVD+RW and burn on DVD+R media.

I tested on Memorex, HP, TDK, Verbatim, Hi-Space and unbranded DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs. The results were as described on the earlier post.
DVD+R is consistently better on any PS2 above V5 or with a top condition laser unit. DVD+R is supposed to be the standard for the future.
Regards!

My v7 works fine with dvd-r, just had one problem with Vice City, which has been solved by burning TDK @ 2x.
V7 Ultra2 Premod.
