Tricking RNM4.5 to work with the Pioneer 108 –
Even with the 5.07 px engine, my copy of RNM4.5 would not give burn speed selection--only min-mid-max. For the most part this works OK if you don't load one of the X-all firmwares. You only have 3 options: 1X-4X-roughly 8X. This may create a nice set of silver coasters if using cheapo media.
I did some snooping in Hex-Edit, and found a config string for the Pioneer 106 drive in the pxdrv.dll file. I simply edited this to flag it as a PIONEER DVR-108 (changed the 6 to an 8) and I have speed selections again. It doesn't match up perfectly (I guess the bit assignments are different), but it is better than gambling with min-mid-max for those who prefer the RNM interface to the Ulead Burn Now wizard (it doesn't verify the disc!!??). So far it has burned at the proper speeds on my DVD's for 1X, 2X, and 4X selection. I have noticed it is off on the CD-R's though. I tried burning CD at 8X to test last night, and it actually burned at 4X.
I haven't dug any deeper in the dll's to see if an entry exists for the 107 yet, if so it might be a better choice. If there is a newer px then the 5.07, this might be something to look into with that release if I ever get my hands on a newer engine.
If anyone wants to test this with their 5.07 engine, I can email the edited pxdrv.dll file I am using. Just PM me and I will get it out to you. I am still running W98SE, but the dll should be universal to both the 9x and NT kernel OS's.
If it ain't broke don't try to fix it! But, hell if you can tweak that bastard just a little bit more....hehehe.
