I'm getting the same problem as dave with xenosaga, I get the PS2 logo than a black screen. If i boot up with the original than swap it out with the backup the game seems to run fine(only played about 15-20mins)
I used DVD decrypter to read and burn.
Set book type to DVD-ROM
I have a Messiah 2 chip and v7 PS2
Used Verbatim DVD+R DL
Burnt with Plextor 716A
Any suggestion or link on how to get a working backup?
Did you test the PI/PO errors on that disk ? What Xenosaga version is it ?
It's Ep.#1. The PI/PO errors are fine.
I tried to use the rip kit and the DVD9 patch didn't get applied and i got the same thing. After the PS2 logo it goes black. I redid the ripkit and the game works fine. Do you think if i took out the DVD9 checks that it would work on the DL media? Would the PS2 see the 2nd layer? I would try but it's getting costly, i guess this why there is not much info out there about copying to a DL disk.
You're right that expensive media is the main reason of these problems, none wants to spend 50 usd on a few coasters. I think there are some checks in the game, so burning from an original does not seem to work. The MorningWood version burnt to the DL disk works fine, BUT that does not work from HDD. I also would test your burn in a newer console (V9+) with some newer chips if any available, just to see, we tested the Xenosaga DL backups on Matrix Infinity chips in V10 machines.
pS:do not expect that the MorningWood guys will tell what they did, hehe... Seems they are one of the best *if not the best* DVD9 release groups.
Was the DL backup the MoriningWood one?
Dave Kramer I should also agree with uns97.The Dual layer burning is a mess. But there are games that reported working. In my case the Metal Gear 2 with nec3500 and Booktype set to DVD-Rom even with ritek media. But the problem are that some ps2s do boot some not, some modchips support is some not.Now about the GT4 I have not tested it since there may be several reasons for it not working and since there is only one release out so far it may be the file itself. When the other versions come out we should then check what the problem is...
minos197 how exactly did you back MG2 up? What chip do you have? Version of PS2?
My copy seems to work, but will not bootup on it's own. I have played more of the game off the DL backup and no problems.(I boot with the disc 1 of the ripkit and start a game pause it than insert the DL backup)

We tested DL backups on a Matrix Infinity in V9/V10 machines. Have not tested those in older ones. Probably the older machines might have just weak lasers to read these disks properly. The Xenosaga we tried was the MorningWood release, I have no access to that many originals. Oh, and is your modchip an ORIGINAL M2 or any clone, I am not sure that the clones support DVD9 properly.
It's an "ORIGINAL M2" chip. The original works fine, MG2 works.
I'm wondering than if they(MoriningWood) did anything to the backup. Like i have stated my DL works just doesn't boot past the PS2 logo. Now if I remve the DVD9 checks(like in the ripkit) will it work? will it see the other layer? I think i might try tonight. Just really don't want to waste another DL disk.
Pellinore: do not waste your disk. Get the MorningWood version, burn that, it should work. (would be worth a try to compare the original to the MorningWood version though, just to make sure whether they changed anything or not)
