    Thanks to CDFreaks and Clubic:

The French hardware site Clubic has posted information about Sony's upcoming dual layer (DVD+R9), dual format DVD recorder with modelname DRU-700. Writing dual layers will enable the drive to write 8.5 GB on a dual layer DVD recordable where at the moment about 4.7 GB can be written to a DVD recordable. The DRU-700 writes dual layer DVD recordables at 2.4 speed and normal DVD+R and DVD-R discs are written at 8 speed. Writing DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs will be at a maximum of 4 speed.

Besides writing DVD recordables the drive is also able to write CD-Rs. It is able to do this at 40 speed and it writes CD-RW discs at 24 speed. Reading back of CDs is performed at 40 speed while the drive reads back data from a DVD at a maximum of 12 speed.

The drive will be delivered with Nero and should cost about 199 EURO. An external version of the drive will also be available at 299 EURO.

It is very likely that they won't work in current dvd players or the ps2, as they are said to have very low reflectivity.

Last I heard, Pioneer was waiting for the DVD Forums to review the proposal for the new format. So, it would appear they essentially have a product ready for market--the original ETA of the Pioneer drive was by Q2 2004, so they appear to be on target.

    Interesting aside about the 2004 CES--Pioneer demonstrated DVD-R-9 burning with a modified A-06 drive.......hmmmm........

Not much info there, but it was enough to catch the eye.

If it ain't broke don't try to fix it! But, hell if you can tweak that bastard just a little bit more....hehehe.
