I am just curious - could these firm ware updates include an ability to prevent PS2 DVD image recording? Lets say Sony decides to implement a new method of pressing their PS2 games so that it is detectable under its DRU DVD drive - could it be possible then that Sony could prevent the DVD imaging of a PS2 game?

no they wouldnt even take the time to think about if it is possible because that would just be a waste of time in itself, wont happen forget about it
Even if they did, it would only be applicable to their Sony drives. Pioneers and other brands would still be merrily copying away...
if they did that they would probably piss a few people off, so i doubt it would happen and hope not since this is the drive i am getting soooonn.. whenever the lazy buggers release it again over here

Don't have the drive. Doubt I will get it since - they are fuzzy with their support for RecordNowMax. I think I will wait for Memorex - hopefully they will put up a +/- support although I highly doubt it. I think they are in the game at + support only.
But with this potential in mind - I would ditch getting the DRU from Sony. I'm sure they will one day implement it. It is just a matter of time.

LOL No they won't. If they deviated from the acceptable industry standards for DVD+R/DVD-R it would be a death knell for them and the device and create more consumer backlash than it was worth.Quote:

Just take any one of their standard CD-R/RW drives as an example and the fact that they've never inserted code into the drive's BIOS to prevent the copying of PSX games...
agree with balto.. the potantial for the loss of market share in the dvdr market is too much to risk, even more so with them as they seem to be the leaders in the push of +r. They've got too much to lose.. very little to gain by doing this.
