I've finally got around to installing a crystal chip 2.0 in my v12 PS2 and I've just tried burning a backup of Rock Band 2, but I can only play some songs. A lot of songs cause the game to freeze at the loading screen.

I'm using 8x infiniti DVD+R DL discs with the booktype set to DVD-ROM and I burned it using imgburn at 4x and then tried again at 2.4x.

Is the problem caused by a bad quality media or a bad laser? Would it be better to find some DVD-R DL discs? Would calibrating the laser help?

Also as a second question, does anyone know where I can buy a HDcombo in the UK?

    Thanks everyone

EDIT: I've just tried to boot 3 DVD-R discs but none of them work. Is that a problem with my modchip?

Sounds like your in the right ball park..

Its ither the media~your backup~your laser giving you issues..
I would first see if other media (games) work on your system with a backup disk..

If they do then more then likely its not your laser thats having issues..
If you know the rip was done correctly then you then know that the media is the issue and not the rip nor the laser..

Its all about braking things done and see what works or not..

EDIT: Just seen your edit up top..
If you cant read any of your other media then see if you can play any legit PS2 games or DVD (movie dvd's) and also try audio cd's (music cd's) in your moded system..

If they all work then its ither a proublem with the way you installed your modchip or the modchip it self..
Could still be the media being used on your riped games as well..
If the legit media does not work then the modchip is other fryed or the install is faulty..

    Keep us posted..

As for the HDCombo I am no help on that subject..

Well legit games work, and Rockband 2 on DVD+R DL works except for some songs. Any games that I've tried to burn onto the DVD-R discs I have won't even boot or get recognised.

I've noticed when I try to play the dvd-r discs, the discs spin and then stop and then start spinning again and then stop continuously. What could be the cause of that?

Mostly poor media or burning quality. Some PS2 models also like DVD+R instead if DVD-R. What media brand are you using and how fast do you burn them?
    Slim PS2 SCPH-70004 (v13) w/ FMCB, 3x Sony 8MB, 1x MaxMemory 16MB (Backup card)

I'm not available for FMCB installation service until I can guarantee a processing time of a few days again, sorry.

I'm sorry you're having trouble loading this. I would personally go ahead and try the SATA connector thread instead of the HDCombo, but only because I already have HDCombo. I bought it shortly before it was discontinued.

Maybe you can try the manufacturer directly if you really want it. I haven't had trouble loading my Rock Band and Rock Band 2 backups via HDLoader. Since most people use SATA HDD's, it would only make sense to use the SATA adapted extension. Not pretty and compact, but it'll work and should load your games faster from PC to external SATA. Probably won't make a difference loading on your PS2 because it's most likely a SATA to IDE converter in the mix.

Thanks for your help everyone. I'm going to buy some Verbatim DVD+R discs and see if they work.

The DVD-R discs I was using were branded piodata (never heard of it), but the media code is RITEKG05. I thought Ritek was a good brand?

Thanks for the link about the SATA connector, I'll look into that a bit more.

Edit: My Verbatim DVD+R discs came today and they work perfectly.
