i know this question have been asked many times. i have read most of the previous answers to them. I really need some verification.

I have a v7 DMS and wonder if the extensive used of cd-r and dvd-rips would do harm to the laser as most of my games are cd-rs? Has it been proven? i heard it does for v4 but not sure about v7 laser since it is an improvement over v4. How long would i see the effects from it?

I have several dvd-r, some dvd+r and it works like the origianls but cdr has clicking laser sound. I'm afraid of killing my ps2 lasers or the motor that moves the laser with the cdr so i stopped using em.

Wanna know that too. I use a lot of rips, and today is the first time I heard this. I can hear the CDs spin loudely in my v7, while DVDs spin without giving any sound. Don't think that it abuses the laser, since it doesn't touch it, the laser only reads it.

yes it does damage it .. some games have high reading requirements, like gta3 which streams the city from the disc, but if its on dvd the stress is obviously less cuz it can read larger amounts of data - but not all rips are like that, some will just load the necessary data into the ps2 memory like fighting games etc.

so it varies from rip to rip, some are very bad for the laser, while others are fine. CDr always sounds loud in mine as well, i think thats normal.

if you can get dvd its better, but i use rips as well.. just be aware that u might have to replace your laser one day - if u cant accept that fact, dont mod ya ps2

thats why its important to use good media for your ps2

In terms of replacing my ps2 laser, will it last as long as my psx? I've been using cdr with my psx and up until now, i notice it's weakening. I had it for well over 4 years.

The ps2 laser seems to be much of an issue these days. Back then with the psx, i've not heard of the laser unit failing. If by any chance my ps2 laser dies, where can i get a replacement? Does a ver 4 laser work on a ver 7 ps2 since i've seen ver 4 more often?

i heard that the new ps2 unit has a stronger laser and the chances of it dying is much like the psx.
