firstly, do you have a cd burner?

    if yes, then read on.

you will need a modchip, of which there are loads, check www.lik-sang.com for a full selection.

to actually copy the games, you'll need some software, I personally like either: clonecd or cdrwin, which you can get from www.elaboratebytes.com and www.goldenhawktechnology.com respectively.

install the software, buy it if you feel inclined to do so, if not there are plenty of cracks out there, which I don't endorse of course.

if using cdrwin, click on the box with 2 cds on it, if you hold teh cursor over it it'll say backup disk.

put in the original ps2 disk and start backing up.

that will only work with cd type game though.

to copy the dvd type games you will need a cd burner, which go for around £200 I think. check www.maplin.co.uk

and then you'll have to buy blank dvd-rs which are around £2 each.

so there you go, any more questions feel free to ask

i was reading an e-book which stated something about chipping the ps2 via a usb cable which eliminated the need for soldering chips inside as i dont really have a clue how to do.

    thanx for useful info.

one can go through the USB but you still need to solder 1 wire
but you could get a no solder chip if you have a version 4/5/6

Does the Free version of CDRWIN create Psx and PS2 cdr backups well or am I doing something wrong? I followed Modchip.ca's support page and started my backup by first selecting icon for ExtractDisc/Tracks/Sectors/. After it saves the data to hard drive I then go to Record Disc. It goes 3/4 way through recording and I get error.

I read in this thread where Gazdaman said to use the Backup Disc icon first then use the Record Disc icon next. I will give this a try next time. Iwould like to know what is the best type of media to use for both PSX and PS2 cdr's and is the type of burner you use important? Currently I am using a Sony 8x4x32 and Sony Acer media recording at 1x.

Edit: I tried the above method by Gazdaman and got the same results "illegal error half way through the record.

What Gaz failed to mention is that CDRWin is absolutely incapable of reading and imaging anything on DVD media. It's ONLY good for discs that state they are in Compact Disc format on the rear of the game cover (which includes any and all PSX/PS1 releases.)

To backup or image a DVD game disc requires a DVD-ROM or DVD-R burner to read the disc and PrimoDVD or RecordNow Max (or Nero if you so desire) to generate a Global Image. That GI is then burned with a DVD-R burner (Pioneer A03/A04 or Panasonic LF-D311) to a quality DVD-R blank and may ultimately contain up to 4.7GB of data.

    You just can't stuff 4.7GBs into a 700MB bag...

There's no special trick in using CDRWin with either PSX/PS1 or PS2 discs in Compact Disc format.

The default settings work perfectly when creating the Bin/Cue set and the only problem most folks encounter is that their CD-R burner isn't on the Supported Device list over at www.goldenhawk.com and therefore their burners don't support RAW mode, which is necessary for successful operations.

Double check that your burner is actually supported and it might not hurt to also check that your burner has the latest firmware revision.

    Thank Balto,

I just downloaded all the necessary updates to see if that will help as my Sony is supported for CDRwin. One question. With the freeware version it records in 1x mode only, and you mention something about my burner has to support RAW mode, should I have selected the "RAW" option in the record mode? There are options for test, RAW mode, and open new session to select from? After I created my bin/cue file, I then saved it and opened it under record mode. From here I did not select any of the modes previously mentioned just hit record button. Maybe that is my problem.

On a different note. What is the recommend installation priority for a burner with and additional CDrom installed or does it matter?

    My exsisting setup:
Primary = Hard drive (master) N/A (slave)
Secondary = CDrom (master) Sony Burner (slave)

I would like to know before I install my new burner. I just bought a new LiteOn burner 40x12x48 yesterday.

I've never had to check the RAW mode options with either my Yamaha or Plextor burners and have always used the defaults and just supplied the file name to save the image to.

As for your hardware setup, I'd recommend flipping the drives on your Secondary chain, i.e. Sony (or LiteOn) as Master and CDrom reader as Slave.

Read the manual that comes with the LiteOn to see what IDE interface "modes" it supports (PIO4, Multi-word DMA 2, etc.) and if you're running 98/ME, check your IDE controller's channel configuration in Device Manager to ensure it's talking to the drive in a fashion that it can accept.

DO NOT use an 80-pin, ATA-100 cable on the CDrom or either burner and stick with a 40-pin standard (ATA-33) cable on that Secondary channel.
