PrimoDVD Error
I just got the Pioneer A04 DVD burner, but the OEM version (DVR-104) so it was jut the drive, no cables, instructions, etc.
Well, I'm not a moron so I knew how to install it. Windows XP found the new hardware, but when I went to Windows Explorer, it listed its label as "CD Drive."
So I install PrimoDVD and had to reboot. I reboot, load PrimoDVD, and it tells me "No compatible Recorder drives have been found on this computer."
Now, I went back into Windows Explorer and it now says DVD-R Drive for a label, so that's good. I also went to Pioneer's website and there are no driver or firmware updates there, so I am not sure what's wrong.
Obviously, I do not want to try to burn a DVD-R and get an error right off the bat.
Why can't Primo find my DVD burner, and what can I do to make it recognize it?
Also, are there any other ways to find out if it's working? Device Manager says it is, but I mean, is there a program I can load up and somehow be able to tell if the DVD burner is recognized by it without wasting a DVD-R to tell?
Thanks.

PrimoDVD needs the latest PX Engine Update to be recognised by the A04/104. This is from the Prassi Support Site (can't find the URL) but it's there when you search on Prassi.

I had the same problem. The way I got rid of it was by installing the the software that came with my drive (I got the AO4), there was a cd in the box with powerdvd and some other programs. I have an old machine, and I never needed to update it's driver.

Odds are you need to update your ASPI layer so that Windows can communicate with the drive correctly. The MS version of ASPI that ships with XP sucks. v4.60 is the most stable (as v4.70 is crap and has problems.) If you can't locate it and have news group access, I can post it in alt.binaries.misc for you.
Another thing is whether your IDE controller supports PIO Mode 4 and/or MultiWord DMA Mode 2. Check the setting in Windows Control Panel | Device Manager. If not, you'll need to get a PCI controller that can. Use a standard 40-pin IDE cable. Do NOT use an 80-pin ATA-100 cable.
The A04 should also be the Master device on the Secondary channel.
Also, I highly recommend you install the latest Px Engine update (1.1.327) which can be found at:
