I have WinME and didnt do anything special when i hooked up the 104. I set the jumper to slave and attached it to the 2nd cd-rom connector on the ribbon. Went to Pioneers website to update to firmware 1.32. All works fine.

Makes no difference as the A0x / 10x series supports both PIO Mode 4 and Multi-Word DMA Mode 2. If your IDE controller doesn't support Multi-Word DMA (which isn't Ultra DMA), then leave well enough alone and stick to PIO Mode 4.

DMA is actually a tad bit more processor intensive than PIO and frankly, if you're expecting a dramatic speed increase, you'd never be able to tell the difference between the two.
