pioneer 104 help –
can i wright at 2x without updating the firmware my firmware is the standard 1.30 if i have to update what is the best version to update to my drive is the pioneer104
i'm no expert on firmware revisions, but i believe the A/104 came as a 2x burner out of the box. So no matter which firmware you have it should be able to burn 2x. The only reason it wouldn't burn 2x is if you aren't using 2x media. I've also got a 104 and burn speed depends on the media i'm using, or if it's RW media, RW media will only work at 1x. I've been thinking about updating the firmware on the drive cause of the updates from the dvd forum, but han't got around to doing it yet. The burner never stops!
104... powered but Energizer!
i udated the firmware to 1.40 its alot better
Those firmware updates typically add more definition support for various brands of media, which is why it pays to keep current the majority of the time...
Stable 2X if you have a Pioneer 104/A04 Drive on Firmwire version 1.31
1x if you have other dvdr drives or other version of Firmwire
This is from meritline website, in regards to ritek dvd media:
You might want to use this firmware, as it will burn at 2x on more media.I'm no expert at this type of thing, what do you think Balto.
Grab the test utility in the sticky at the top of the DVD-R Forums list page. It will tell you what speed you should be able to reliably write your media with your current firmware. As Balto said--a newer firmware at this point will only offer more variety of media to be used. The 4X update just corrects a bug that would send your drive mechanics haywire with 4X media and burn out your laser head unit. There are some specific namebrands assigned to a few firmware revisions on the Pioneer website--grab the one that applies if your manufacturer is listed (that utility will give this name also--it's not always the name brand you bought the media under).
