so i have had a pioneer a04 since it first came out. has worked great to back up my ps2 stuff ( and everything else ) but i because of taking on a project where i will be burning a lot more dvd's for someone ( non ps2 related ) i am looking into upgrading to a new dvd burner. since most of the new drives are all dual format / dual layer ( which i will need to get due to the dvd's being over 5 gigs ) i was looking at either the plextor 716, pioneer a09 or sony ( i think it is the 720 but might be wrong with the number ).

does anyone have any experience with any of these and can make any suggestions?

    thanks in advance.

Forget the Sony... Plextor is ok, but there have been several bad batches. They offer several extra functions that no other drives do, but they cost much more. NEC (35XX) is also a very good and cheap drive. Benq 1620 also has some good reviews. Pioneer A09 has some serious problems, but I am sure those will be corrected in future firmware releases... It all depends on your need and the money. I'd go for the Plextor if I had enough money, if not then I'd buy a NEC 3520/3530/3540.

thanks for your thoughts.. i have been leaning towards the plextor since i have always had good experiences with them. also they have a great customer service department. i had one problem with a cdr once. i called, told them what was going on and they sent me out a new drive to replace it right away. the drive they sent was even better then the one i had.

Yes Plextor has a nice support. If you can afford get the Plextor. But don't forget to test it as soon as you get it, and if you think it is a faulty one, take it back to the STORE (do not request RMA, as they send you another refurb. unit !!!) as they will replace it to a new one. There is no other drive that can give you such a quality burn as a Plextor - asumming you got a WORKING drive -.

    regards, Stephen
