Need help having problems with Backing up games. –

I'm been having some problems backing up DVD games. It seems games that are over 4.0gb aren't coming out right. I've been using Nero and Instant DVD/CD to do copy disc backups. The games i've had the most problems with are Gran Turismo 3 (which boots up with the PS2 logo shows the first 2 warning screens that talk about GT3, then it frezzes up. Then GTA 3 will start up go through the opening intro and when I start to drive to the base in the begining of the game the buildings start to break up and then the game frezzes and it tells me GTA3 DVD disc error. I have a Pioneer a04 and have been using Memorex DVD-r's. I also have a ver 1 PS2 with a Magic 2. Any Ideas on what is causing this to happen? Any suggestions?

WOw, thats strange, i thought it was only me.
I get exactly the same problem with GTA3 (havent Tried GT3 tho)
You play the game and the GFX go "fuzzy" and glitch right out.
I have 3 possible explainations:
1) Possibly its the DVD-R media, i will try higher quality media asap and let you know
2) I never considered this before, but mayby its the accessing speeds, IE the game cannot access the DVD quick enough to render the GFX, i thought of this as the game takes 2-3 times longer to load than the original DVD!
3) Its a bad copy/burn, i have a Pioneer DVD-R 104, i used nero on a 1:1 copy (using temp image file), burn-proof enabled and setting were all correct.
Im still experimenting with PS2 Copying (with little success unfortunatley) so i cant be much more help, but at least you know it isnt just you,

Try using PrimoDVD or RecordNow Max to do the image to your hard drive instead of Nero -- especially if you're on a Win9x/ME system. Win9x/ME uses FAT32 which has a 4.0GB file size limitation, which I don't know if Nero handles 4GB+ files correctly.
Primo or RNMax with the Px engine update creates split files of 1.99GB each which even Win95 FAT16 users can save and use. See other threads here for the Px update URL.
Memorex media is iffy to say the least and many folks have had problems with those discs. Lousy dye formulation or something. Get a TDK, Verbatim, Pioneer, or Apple and give it another go at 2x, not 1x, as contrary to popular belief, the slower 1x burns can cause some of the problems you describe, even on quality media.
I have a v1 PS2 and it also acted wacky until I ran a Blaze cleaning disc thru 3 back-to-back cleaning cycles. It also hates 1x burns as mentioned above.
Also check to see that your 104 has the latest firmware.
Could be the laser in your PS2 doesn't like Memorex media (which has always been kinda iffy anyway.)
Get a TDK, Verbatim, Pioneer, or Apple blank and try another burn at 2x. No problem with any of those brands in my v1 with a Magic2 V3.
Also make sure your DVR-104 has the latest firmware in it. Find it here:
