Hi everyone, i am looking for a dvd writer but i dont have enough
"$" to purchase other brands ><.. so my question is is
LITEON LDW-451S DVD+-RW IDE 4X2X12 OK for burning PS2
DVD games?..thanks a alot!!!>< boz i was really confusing with different brands, and i heard pioneer is the best, but i dont have extra money to purchase
my pc configuration:
Celeron 300a o/c-> 451
384 mb ram
hope it would be ok to use the dvd writer by this..system..

I've not heard any bad things about this drive, but as an alternative the NEC 1300 is also a widely used burner of about the same price. Also depends what you want to use it for:D
Now the bad news, I don't think you'll get very far writing DVDs with a system of this spec. You're likely to encounter problems installing the associated software, and even more hassle trying to burn disks.

Why ? I don't think that PC can't handle such a simple task as DVD writting. I am sure it will do.
About this writer: I bought one one month ago. And I already sold that. I have been in optical storage for many many years but this drive was the biggest dissapointment in my life. This wrote so bad quality disks, that a lot of PS2s do not load the games. No matter if I thrown in a Sony or any other BRAND disk. To my great surprise it worte to noname DVD-Rs at 4x, and my Pioneer writes that only at 1x. But that was just one thing. There has not been new firmware at that time, now there's a new one, I just wish they improved the code as it is hardly needed. So, well, as just like other LiteOn products this may be good as time passes by, but now it's still too new, so if you can, avoid it. I recommend the Nec 1300, Nec 2500, Pioneer 106/107 or the Asus/Teac drives (same as Pioneer 106) or the Plextor (but it's too expensive). Any of these will be better for burning PS2 DVD backups.

pS: not to mention, except the Pioneer and its clones, none of the above mentioned writers can write at 1x which may be usefull when dealing with PS2 disks...

You won't regret the Pioneer. It's one of the best drives...

My point about system spec was made as I had a mate with a similarly specified PC. He had a lot of problems writing the dvds, as his PC was struggling to supply the data fast enough.
I'm not arguing with uns97 given is experience (and my lack of posts), but I have known problems in the past.
EDIT: I also agree about the Pioneer - mine's been great.
bumholio: writing at 4x means about 5000 kbyte/sec. When writing at lower speeds then it's even less, 1500/3000 kbyte/sec at 1x and 2x speed. This speed is not that high when you have one of todays hard disks. It's not a processor or RAM question. It deppends only on the hard disk speed. And I am sure any HDD bigger than 20-30 Gbyte *and I assume he has one of those, if he wants to store dvd images, right ?* can easily do that task. Anyway, the only problem can happen when he wants to make DIRECT backups I mean from DVD ROM to DVD writer, as those used to cause problems especially if the two devices are on the same IDE chanel. I suggest everybody to avoid this, as it's not the safest thing. But reading the image to HDD, and writing from any 20 GB+ HDD, the data flow is good enough to write at 4x or at lower speeds.

Toshiba drives have problems with several media. If you use quality media, then it's ok. If you are unsure what type of media you're going to use and/or you're going to use many type of media, you better forget Toshiba. Look at its price, it tells it all.
