Is my mod chip outdated? Magic 3.0?
Is my mod chip outdated? Magic 3.0? –

I have an ntsc v1 ps2 and a Magic 3.0 chip that have been working fine for a long time. I've made many backups using record now max and burning the .gi files straight to DVDR. Recently though I've been having problems getting some games to completly boot like Silent Hill 3. I don't know if my mod chip is obsolete due to new copyrighting measures employed by developers, or if I just made a bad burn. I don't think it's a bad burn because the game will partially boot and then freeze on a black screen with " silent hill 3 " on the bottom right hand corner. Also, all my old backups still work fine. Is there some sort of patch I should be using when I back up my games now, or do I need a new mod chip?
Thanks

I am no genius but I think a switch is required on certain games, after the game has booted you turn the chip off so the games can't detect it.
hope this helps

Turn the chip off? how on earth would you do that? I have a magic 3.0 and it sucks donkey balls, my laser is fine and all but it takes like 50 tries to get cd-r rips boot, I haven't got single brand of DVD-r to boot yet (all direct game copies with Alcohol 120%/Nero ect.) bah
now I have to fork out NZ$200 for a Messiah 2 upgrade.

oh, and to get backups ect. to boot you press the reset button REALLY HARD, and sometimes it hurts like hell.

UHHHHHH
needing 50 tries to get a cd-r to boot, and having to press the reset button with any force means your ps2 is ****ed up, not the chip. how the hell would a chip alter the amount of pressure required for the reset button to work? the damn button isnt pressure sensitive, it's either pressed with hardly any force, or it isnt.
and considering the guy above mentioned that a switch was needed, usually switches are to turn things on or off, so guess how you turn the chip off genius?

very harsh way of putting it but you are right
the magic 3.0 chip was out dated as soon as it left the factory. if you want to keep that chip you have to have someone reflash/program a newer code in it to a 3.1. but even then that chip sucks get the messiah 2 pro or the dms and you would never post another subject like this again.

Actually, I just took my ps2 apart to check that all my connections are still solid (they are) and I realized I have a Magic "2" chip version #3 (which was made to fit v1-3 consoles). So... Is anyone having problems getting this chip to boot backups of recent games? Like I said before this chip still boots most of my backups fine (even soul calibur 2) but games like Silent Hill 3 only start to boot and then freeze after getting past the "playstation 2" logo. I read something about some games doing a second autentication check durring the boot process...could this be the problem? And are newer chips designed to deal with this? Do some games detect mod chips? Also, I know the problem isn't my laser. Even though it's a launch v1ps2 I've never gotten the "disk read error" even once.
Thanks

Have you been able to boot a direct backup of silent hill 3?
