    do i have to have a dvd writer for those media reader programs to work? i have a dvd rom for my laptop, and am curious to see what type of dvd media i have and my friend uses (since visually his are crap)
    ive seen a few programs
    dvdinfo pro
    dvd decrepyter (havent been able to find)

    what other ones are there.

    You can also use Nero's speed test to identify media. It requires the disc to be in a burner though.

    so you cant even get the media ID with a DVDROM?

    reason why I ask is, I have a Panasonic Ldf-311 DVDRAM, and it will NOT read the media ID's it just shows up DVDR General. My Pioneer DVR-105 will though.

    So is it maybe just the particular DVDROM that jung_rob is using?

    You must use your burner, not a dvd-rom.

    boo, all i have is a dvd-rom.
    maybe its time to start looking into a writer. theyre cheap enough now.
